Minot State rallies late, but falls to Minnesota State University Moorhead 71-64

MINOT, ND --The Minot State women's basketball team took a 48-46 lead into the fourth quarter, but could not hang on and fell 71-64 to the Minnesota State University Moorhead Dragons at home Wednesday.

The Beavers (8-16, 7-10) had two players score in double figures, led by Jessica Mogen, who had 21 points and seven rebounds. Maya Aguilar tacked on 12 points and two blocks and Emma Mogen added nine points and two steals.

The Minot State offense made hay from deep, knocking down eight threes on 30 attempts. Aguilar hit two treys for the Beavers in the contest.

Minot State's defense held Minnesota State University Moorhead to only 36.1 percent shooting from the field, including 26.5 percent from beyond the arc. The Beavers also limited Natalie Jens to 3-of-12 shooting and eight points in the game.

How It Happened

After playing to a 2-2 tie early in the game, Minot State went on a 7-0 run with 8:35 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Jessica Mogen, to take a 9-2 lead. The Beavers then lost some of that lead, but still entered the quarter break with a 17-13 advantage. Minot State got a great contribution from its bench in the period, as non-starters accounted for five of its 17 total points.

Minnesota State University Moorhead rallied to take a 28-26 lead before Minot State went on a 6-0 run starting at the 2:24 mark in the second period, highlighted by a three from Jessica Mogen, to take a 32-28 lead. The Dragons cut into that lead, but the Beavers still enjoyed a 36-33 advantage heading into halftime. Minot State was strong from deep in the period, knocking down three three-point shots to account for nine of its 19 points.

Minot State wasted no time building on its lead, going on a 6-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Aguilar, to expand its lead further to 42-33 with 6:16 to go in the third. Before the conclusion of the third period, the Dragons had cut into that lead somewhat, but the Beavers still entered the fourth quarter with a 48-46 edge.

Minnesota State University Moorhead then erased the Minot State lead in the game's final quarter for a 71-64 comeback victory. Minot State got up and down the court quickly in the quarter, scoring four fast break points.
