MINOT, ND --The Minot State women's basketball team held Wayne State to just 15.8 percent from beyond the arc in a 3-for-19 shooting performance on the way to a 68-61 win over the Wildcats at home Saturday.
The Beavers (9-12, 6-8) had four players score in double figures, led by Lara Dobbins, who had 17 points and seven rebounds. Tiyahna Trottier tacked on 14 points and two steals and Maya Aguilar chipped in as well with 14 points and two steals.
The Minot State offense was strong from three-point land, pouring in eight threes on 29 attempts. Aguilar hit four treys for the Beavers in the contest.
The Minot State defense was effective at taking away the basketball in Saturday's game, forcing 20 Wayne State turnovers while committing 18. Those takeaways turned into 25 points on the offensive end of the floor. Jessica Mogen's five steals led the way individually for the Beavers.
How It Happened
After falling behind 13-6, Minot State went on a 7-0 run with 4:05 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Trottier, to tie the game at 13. Wayne State (NE) then pulled ahead, sending the Beavers into the second quarter down 19-18.
Wayne State kept adding to that lead, building a 26-22 advantage before Minot State went on a 5-0 run, highlighted by a bucket from Jaime Skeggs, to take a 27-26 lead. The Wildcats then came roaring back to take a 31-28 lead heading into halftime.
After intermission, Minot State rallied to tie it up at 35-35 before going on a 5-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Dobbins, to grab a 40-35 lead with 2:56 to go in the third. Before the third period was over, the Beavers added one point to that lead and entered the fourth quarter with a 45-39 edge. Minot State knocked down three three-pointers in the quarter to score nine of its 17 total points.
Minot State kept its lead intact before going on an 8-0 run, finished off by Maya Vibeto's three, to grow the lead to 55-45 with 5:41 to go in the contest. The Wildcats narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Beavers still cruised the rest of the way for the 68-61 win. Minot State got a boost from its bench in the period, with non-starters scoring six of its 23 total points.
