WINONA, Minn. -- The Minot State women's basketball team came up short in a 74-64 loss to the Winona State Warriors on the road Saturday in NSIC action.
The Beavers (9-14 overall, 6-10 NSIC) had three players score in double figures, led by Taryn Hamling, who had 18 points. Jessica Mogen tacked on 12 points and Tiyahna Trottier helped out with 11 points off the bench.
Minot State forced 14 Winona State turnovers while committing just five themselves in Saturday's game. The Beavers turned those takeaways into eight points on the offensive end of the floor. Maya Aguilar led the way individually with two steals.
How It Happened
Minot State kept it close in the first quarter, but entered the second frame down 20-18.
Winona State kept adding to that lead, building a 27-23 advantage before Minot State went on a 5-0 run, highlighted by a three from Jaime Skeggs, to take a 28-27 lead. The Warriors then came roaring back to take a 40-31 lead heading into halftime.
Winona State continued to increase its lead after halftime, building a 51-38 advantage before Minot State went on an 8-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Lara Dobbins, to trim its deficit to 51-46 with 2:29 to go in the third. The Beavers continued to reduce the Winona State lead, shrinking it to 53-49 by the end of the third quarter. Minot State played well near the basket, scoring 10 of its 18 points in the paint.
Winona State kept widening its lead in the fourth, constructing a 72-59 advantage before Minot State went on a 5-0 run, finished off by Mogen's layup, to shrink the deficit to 72-64 with 44 seconds to go in the contest. Winona State responded and outscored the Beavers the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 74-64. Minot State took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring eight of its 15 points in the paint.
