Defensive effort not enough as Minot State falls to Saint Cloud State 80-71

The Minot State women's basketball team kept Saint Cloud State to just 19 percent from beyond the arc in a 4-for-21 shooting performance, but fell 80-71 to the Huskies at home Friday.

The Beavers (7-9, 4-5) had three players score in double figures, led by Taryn Hamling, who had 16 points, five steals and two blocks. Jaime Skeggs added 10 points off of the bench and Jessica Mogen chipped in as well with 10 points and four assists.

The Minot State offense was very productive from beyond the arc, making 11 threes on 36 attempts. Hamling was the most prolific shooter for the Beavers, draining four treys in the contest.

Minot State did a great job disrupting Saint Cloud State shots in the contest, coming away with five blocks. Hamling's two rejections led the way individually for the Beavers.

How It Happened

After falling behind 16-12, Minot State went on a 13-0 run with 2:45 left in the first quarter, culminating in a three from Maya Aguilar, to take a 25-16 lead, a score that would hold for the rest of the period. Minot State relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down five shots to account for 15 of its 25 points.

Minot State kept its first quarter lead intact before going on an 8-0 run starting at the 5:09 mark in the second period, highlighted by a bucket from Skeggs, to increase its lead to 38-27. The Huskies cut into that lead, but the Beavers still enjoyed a 43-40 advantage heading into halftime. Minot State was strong from deep in the period, knocking down four three-point shots to account for 12 of its 18 points.

After intermission, Minot State held on to its advantage and owned a 58-55 lead heading into the fourth quarter. Minot State played well near the basket, scoring 12 of its 15 points in the paint.

Saint Cloud State then erased the Minot State lead in the game's final quarter for an 80-71 comeback victory. Minot State took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring eight of its 13 points in the paint.
