CROOKSTON, Minn. --The Minot State women's basketball team took a 42-41 advantage into the fourth quarter, but could not hang on and fell 62-57 to the Minnesota Crookston Golden Eagles on the road Thursday.
The Beavers (10-16, 7-12) had three players score in double figures, led by Jaime Skeggs, who had 13 points and four assists. Taryn Hamling tacked on a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds and Jessica Mogen helped out with 11 points.
Led by Hamling's three offensive rebounds, Minot State did a great job crashing the offensive glass, pulling down 10 boards that resulted in 10 second-chance points.
Minot State's defense held Minnesota Crookston to only 38.3 percent shooting from the field. The Golden Eagles finished with nine offensive rebounds and managed 14 second-chance points.
How It Happened
Minot State kept it close in the first quarter, but entered the second frame down 11-10.
The Beavers continued to lose ground in the second quarter and faced a 30-26 halftime deficit.
After intermission, Minot State cut its deficit to 37-36 before going on a 6-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Lara Dobbins, to grab a 42-37 lead with 1:35 to go in the third. Before the conclusion of the third period, the Golden Eagles had cut into that lead somewhat, but the Beavers still entered the fourth quarter with a 42-41 edge. Minot State played well near the basket, scoring 10 of its 16 points in the paint.
Minnesota Crookston proceeded to take a 53-52 lead before Minot State went on a 5-0 run, finished off by Dobbins' layup, to seize a 57-53 lead with 2:12 to go in the contest. Minnesota Crookston re-asserted control, outscoring the Beavers 9-0 the rest of the way to hand Minot State the 62-57 loss. Minot State fired away from deep in the quarter, knocking down three shots to account for nine of its 15 points.
