MOORHEAD, MN --The Minot State women's basketball team went into halftime tied 37-37 with Minnesota State-Moorhead, but could not take control in the second half and fell 76-67 to the Dragons on the road Saturday.
The Beavers (10-17, 7-13) had three players score in double figures, led by Jessica Mogen, who had 23 points. Taryn Hamling tacked on 14 points and Tiyahna Trottier chipped in as well with 12 points and two steals.
The Minot State defense was effective at taking away the basketball in Saturday's game, forcing 14 Minnesota State Moorhead turnovers. Those takeaways turned into 13 points on the offensive end of the floor. Trottier's two steals led the way individually for the Beavers.
How It Happened
After falling behind 15-13, Minot State went on a 6-0 run with 3:11 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Mogen, to take a 19-15 lead. The Beavers then lost some of that lead, but still entered the quarter break with a 22-19 advantage. Minot State relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down three shots to account for nine of its 22 points.
The Beavers surrendered their lead in the second quarter and entered halftime with the score tied 37-37. Minot State was strong from deep in the period, knocking down two three-point shots to account for six of its 15 points.
Minnesota State Moorhead proceeded to take over in the third quarter and the Beavers entered the fourth trailing 57-49. Minot State knocked down two three-pointers in the quarter to score six of its 12 total points.
Minnesota State-Moorhead kept widening its lead in the fourth, constructing a 69-58 advantage before Minot State went on a 5-0 run, finished off by Jaime Skeggs' layup, to shrink the deficit to 69-63 with 3:46 to go in the contest. Minnesota State Moorhead responded and outscored the Beavers the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 76-67. Minot State took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring 10 of its 18 points in the paint.
