Women's basketball claims NSIC playoff birth with win at Jamestown

JAMESTOWN, ND --Tiyahna Trottier scored 26 points and Taryn Hamling added 22 and the Minot State women's basketball team beat the Jamestown Jimmies 83-72 on the road Thursday.

The Beavers (11-17, 8-13) had three players score in double figures, led by Trottier, who had 26 points, four assists and two blocks. Hamling tacked on 22 points and six rebounds and Maya Aguilar chipped in as well with 16 points.

Minot State shared the ball well in Thursday's game, racking up 16 assists on 26 made field goals. Jessica Mogen's five assists led the Beavers.

The Minot State defense was effective at taking away the basketball in Thursday's game, forcing 19 turnovers. Those takeaways turned into 13 points on the offensive end of the floor. Mogen's two steals led the way individually for the Beavers.

How It Happened

After jumping to a 20-13 advantage, Minot State went on a 7-0 run with 4:48 left in the first quarter, culminating in a three from Hamling, to increase its lead to 27-13. The Beavers then lost some of that lead, but still entered the quarter break with a 28-21 advantage. Minot State relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down six shots to account for 18 of its 28 points.

Minot State kept its first quarter lead intact before going on a 9-0 run starting at the 7:00 mark in the second period, highlighted by a bucket from Mogen, to increase its lead to 37-25. The Jimmies cut into that lead, but the Beavers still enjoyed a 42-32 advantage heading into halftime. Minot State was strong from deep in the period, knocking down two three-point shots to account for six of its 14 points.

Minot State continued to preserve its halftime lead before going on a 5-0 run, punctuated by a three from Trottier, to expand its lead further to 55-48 with 1:48 to go in the third. The Beavers held onto that lead for the rest of the frame and entered the fourth quarter with a 60-53 edge.

Minot State kept its lead intact before going on a 7-0 run, finished off by Aguilar's layup, to grow the lead to 75-64 with 4:57 to go in the contest. The Beavers held onto that lead for the rest of the game for the 83-72 win. Minot State got up and down the court quickly in the quarter, scoring seven fast break points.
