JAMESTOWN, N.D. - The Minot State softball team opened its season back in January, and now resumes that season this weekend on the road in Jamestown.
The Beavers swing into action playing Dakota Wesleyan and Dickinson State on Friday, then wrap up a four game weekend playing Bismarck State, and Concordia College on Saturday at the Nelson Family Bubble Invitational #2.
Dakota Wesleyan is off to a strong start with a 5-1 record that includes a split on Saturday at Northern State.
As for the Blue Hawks, they're 2-2 on the young season and come in after losses at Briar Cliff and Dordt on Saturday.
Saturday, Minot State takes on a Mystics team that's off to a 1-5 start which includes losses at Briar Cliff and Dordt on Saturday, as well.
As for the Concordia Cobbers, they open their season this weekend under new head coach Cora Zackrison, a former Concordia player who was an assistant at Minnesota State Moorhead last spring.
As for the Beavers, they hit the field after three weeks off, boasting a 3-1 record powered by some strong pitching from junior-college transfer Katie Newberry and sophomore Sarah Misner, who was named the NSIC Pitcher of the Week on February 3.
Misner pitched 9 innings, did not allow an earned run, and picked up 2 wins for the Beavers at their annual Bubble Invitational, while Newberry threw 8 innings, struck out 9 opposing hitters, and earned a win in her Minot State debut weekend.
While they led the way for Minot State in the circle, the Beavers also got some big swings from several players, led by senior Paige Kellogg, who was 5-for-11 in 4 games with 3 RBIs.
Senior Sara Van Wickler and junior Maizy Whitlow have also been big offensive contributors as Van Wickler went 5-for-13 with a team-best 7 runs scored, and Whitlow also went 5-for-13 and leads the Beavers with 5 RBIs.
