MINOT, ND --The Minot State women's basketball team put together a comeback late in Saturday's game, outscoring Minnesota-Duluth 14-4 in the final five minutes, but ultimately came up short, falling to the Bulldogs 74-71.
The Beavers (10-15, 7-11) had four players score in double figures, led by Taryn Hamling, who had 22 points, six rebounds and three steals. Tiyahna Trottier tacked on 16 points and Jessica Mogen helped out with 12 points.
The Minot State offense was very productive from downtown, pouring in 12 threes on 28 attempts. Hamling was the most prolific shooter for the Beavers, draining four treys in the contest.
How It Happened
Minot State struggled out of the gate, falling behind 30-13 at the end of the first quarter.
The Beavers continued to lose ground in the second quarter and faced a 44-25 halftime deficit.
Minot State came out of halftime on fire, going on a 6-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Lara Dobbins, to trim its deficit to 44-31 with 8:00 to go in the third. The Beavers continued to reduce the Minnesota-Duluth lead, shrinking it to 61-51 by the end of the third quarter. Minot State knocked down four three-pointers in the quarter to score 12 of its 26 total points.
Minot State kept the Bulldogs from increasing their lead before going on a 9-0 run, finished off by Trottier's three, to shrink the deficit to 72-71 with 1:00 to go in the contest. Minnesota-Duluth responded and outscored the Beavers the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 74-71. Minot State fired away from deep in the quarter, knocking down four shots to account for 12 of its 20 points.
