BISMARCK, N.D. – A pair of victories set the tone to start a new season for the Minot State track and field teams, who got their spring underway at the Marauders Outdoor Opener on Saturday, hosted by the University of Mary.
Emery Smith raced to victory in the women's 5,000 meters, and
Peyton Tuhy led a strong Beaver finish in the men's 1,500 meters, winning that event on Saturday for the Minot State track and field teams at the first meet of the outdoor track and field season.
Smith, a senior, opened her final outdoor season by winning the women's 5,000 with a time of 18 minutes, 56.49 seconds.
Tuhy, also a senior, started his final outdoor season with a victory in the men's 1,500 in a time of 4:08.31, leading the way for a trio of Beavers who finished in the top 5 as
Holter Bridwell was 3rd in 4:12.98 and
Camden Jasmin finished 5th in 4:15.34.
Adding another top performance for Minot State was freshman thrower
Jamie Ward, who added a 2
nd-place finish on the day in the discus, turning in a throw that ranks No. 5 in the Beavers' NCAA Division II era in her collegiate debut outdoors. Ward was 2
nd with a throw of 136 feet, 7 inches.
One of two 2
nd-place finishes on the day for the Beavers as the Minot State men's 4x400-meter relay quartet of Tuhy, Jasmin,
Cameron Hummel, and
Isaac Rathbun finished as runner-up in that event, as well, in 3:39.28.
Three more Beavers finished in the top 5 in their respective events on the day as
Zander Grover finished 4th in the men's 800 meters in 2:02.95,
Julie Folk was 4th in the women's 1,500 in 5:22.43, and
Ava Ruthven was 4th in the javelin with a throw of 119-10.
With the outdoor season now underway, the Minot State track and field teams return to action in two weeks, once again in Bismarck, competing at the Al Bortke Open on April 3-4.
