Beavers Earn Five-Set Win Before Returning to Conference Action

LAWTON, OK --The Minot State volleyball team lost to the Newman Jets in three sets (15-25, 17-25, 22-25) Saturday at Aggie Gymnasium.

The non-conference loss dropped Minot State to 2-5 on the season.

Jasmin Bell finished with nine kills on the day to lead the Beavers offense while finishing with a hitting percentage of .533. Defensively, four players reached double figures in digs, highlighted by Maya Vibeto's 17, 13 from Caton Pearcy, and 10 more from Haley Saunders.

SET 1 | The Beavers found themselves in an early deficit, losing a tough first set 25-15. Minot State trailed by as many as 11 points as Newman never gave up the lead in a set that was tied up zero times before the Jets took control.

SET 2 | Minot State then lost the second set 25-17 to fall behind in the match two sets to none. Minot State trailed by as many as eight points as Newman grabbed the advantage for good at 2-1 in a set that was knotted up just once before the Jets took over the lead.

SET 3 | Minot State could not win set three and was swept by Newman. The Beavers came up short by the score of 25-22. Newman grabbed the advantage for good at 22-21 in a set that was knotted up 12 times before the Jets took over in the second half of the stanza.

LAWTON, OK --The Minot State volleyball team knocked off Northeastern Riverhawks 3-2 (25-19, 25-18, 14-25, 21-25, 15-5) Saturday at Aggie Gymnasium.

The out-of-conference victory improved Minot State's overall record to 3-5 on the season.

The Beavers were led by a double-double from Caton Pearcy, who registered 14 kills and 15 digs on the day. Katelyn Onespot-Danforth also added 14 kills to help the attack. On the defensive end, Haley Saunders chipped in with 17 digs to go with four blocks from Kiera Hayes.

How It Happened

SET 1 | The Beavers won the first point and held the lead the rest of the way to win the first set 25-19. Minot State led by as many as six points at 6-0 before finishing off the set.

SET 2 | Minot State won set two 25-18 to quickly grab a 2-0 lead. The Beavers led from the opening point on in the set to secure the victory. Minot State opened up as much as a nine point lead at 17-8 before closing out the set.

SET 3 | Minot State saw its bid for a 3-0 sweep end when they took the third set. The Beavers lost the first point and never took the lead before falling in the set 25-14.

SET 4 | Minot State then dropped their second straight set 25-21 to bring the match level at two sets apiece. The RiverHawks grabbed the advantage for good at 14-13 and Minot State was never able to recover in a set that was tied up two times before they took over in the second half of the stanza.

SET 5 | Minot State needed a fifth set to seal the match win. After they grabbed a two sets to none lead, the RiverHawks responded to take the third and fourth sets before the Beavers finished off their victory with a 15-5 fifth-set win. The Beavers led from the opening point on in set five to earn the victory. Minot State ended on a high note, opening its biggest lead of the stanza, 10 points, to finish off the set, totaling 10 kills without registering an attack error in the process.

The Minot State volleyball team returns to action next week as the Beavers open conference play at home. Minot State will face Bemidji State on Friday, September 11, at 6 p.m., before taking on Minnesota Duluth on Saturday, September 12, at 2 p.m.
