Upper Iowa runs over Beavers

Minot has a total of four players score points

Box Score
WINONA, Minn. – Minot State University shot just 21.4 percent in the first half and Upper Iowa put three in double figures as the Peacocks ran past the Beavers 79-38 in NCAA Division II men's basketball Friday at Winona State's McCown Gymnasium.

The Beavers (0-3) hit just six first-half field goals and 14 for the game. MSU finished the contest shooting just 14 for 50 from the floor and knocked down only 3 of 14 on 3-poitners.

“We were not OK in any phase of the game,” said MSU head coach Peter Stewart. “This is one of those were you scratch your head as a coach. We need to retrace our footsteps and wonder why our effort was the way it was.”

Upper Iowa, on the other hand, hit 14 of 28 in the first half and built a 38-17 lead at halftime. Tucker Wentzien led the Peacocks with 16 points and seven rebounds. Mark Lafrenz and Sam Elgin each scored 12 in the win.

Jonas Pollard (Sr., G, Mesa, Ariz.) led the Beavers with 20 points and added four rebounds. Chris East (So., G, Toronto, Ontario) added 10 points and pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds including seven offensive boards. MSU only had four players score in the game.

“There are painful lessons to take and this was one forced down our throats,” Stewart said. “We encouraged the group to bury this feeling and effort right here. This is no, cannot be and will not be how we play basketball. Competing is at the core of what we do.”

MSU takes on host Winona State, one of the top teams in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Saturday.
