Minot State sweeps Minnesota Crookston to run win streak to 14 games

CROOKSTON, Minn. – Minot State University softball extended its winning streak to 14 games with a sweep of Minnesota Crookston Thursday afternoon.

The Beavers bounced the NCAA Division II team 7-0 and 10-1 in nonconference women's softball. MSU has outscored its opponent 127-21 during the streak. Minot State also pushed its season record to 24-10 overall and is 7-2 against future Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference teams.

Minot State has used a formula of quick scoring to win many of its games during the streak, but defeated the Golden Eagles by scoring late runs. In game 1, MSU led just 2-0 entering the seventh, before busting out for five runs. In the second game, the Beavers led 3-0 before a seven-run sixth broke the game open.

In game 1, seniors Kyla Thiesen (2B, Brandon, Manitoba) and Deanna Mitchell (1B, Portage, Manitoba) provided the offensive punch as both went 3 for 4 with a run batted in and a run scored. Jen Dixon (So., OF/P, Brandon, Manitoba), Stacy Fournier (So., INF, Langley, British Columbia) and Corinne Gautron (Jr., C, Winnipeg, Manitoba) finished with two hits as MSU crushed 15 hits in the game.

The Beavers pitching tandem of Mandy Greenberg (Jr., Winnipeg, Manitoba) and Tiffany Friesen (Jr., Morden, Manitoba) was lights out as they allowed just three hits between them. Greenberg went four innings of one-hit ball, while Friesen allowed just two hits in three innings pitched.

It was Dixon's turn to shut down UMC in game 2 as the sophomore twirled a four-hitter. She gave up just one unearned run and struck out seven.

In support of the fine pitching performance were Friesen and Melissa Bell (Fr., C, Belgrade, Mont.). Friesen hit a home run and went 2 for 3 with three RBIs. Bell was 2 for 4 with four runs batted in and a run scored. Dixon also helped her own cause with two hits and an RBI.

Minot State will look to continue its streak and its solid play against future conference foes with a pair of games against rival University of Mary Wednesday (1/3 p.m.) at South Hill Complex.
