Marauders end streak

MSU limited to 11 hits in two games

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 MINOT, N.D. – Minot State University softball ran into a pair of buzz saws in the circle.

The University of Mary pitching staff gave up just one run over two games and halted the Beavers winnings streak at 16 games with a pair of nonconference wins in NCAA Division II softball Wednesday at South Hill Complex.

The Marauders' trio of pitchers Rachel Davis, Emily Sinclair and Erin Keen pitched Mary to a 4-0 and 5-1 sweep of the Beavers.

It looked like MSU might get shut out on the day until a seventh-inning home run by Tiffany Friesen (Jr., P/3B, Morden, Manitoba) in game 2. It was one of just 11 hits on the day for MSU.

Minot State (26-12 overall) had its opportunities, especially in game 1, to get runs. The Beavers stranded five runners and finished the game with six hits, but couldn't push a run across. MSU was thrown out at the plate to end one inning and had a player thrown out at second after the ball scooted away from the catcher to negate a first-and-third opportunity.

MSU starter Mandy Greenberg cruised through five innings, but struggled with one out in the sixth. She gave up a double to Allison Brown and a two-run home run to Kristin Ormsby as the Marauders took a 3-0 lead. Greenberg went 5 1/3 innings, giving up three runs on five hits while striking out nine.

But Davis and Sinclair needed just one as Davis went five innings and scattered six hits and Sinclair pitched two innings of no-hit ball for U-Mary (23-16).

Kyla Thiesen (Sr., 2B, Brandon, Manitoba) and Melissa Bell (Fr., C, Belgrade, Mont.) had two hits each for Minot State.

Game 2 wasn't nearly as close as the Marauders touched up MSU pitching for five runs after three innings.

The Beavers made things interesting in the seventh, however. After Friesen homered, Katie Backes (So., OF/SS, Minot, N.D.) singled and Carmen Vargas (Jr., C, Cathedral City, Calif.) walked with no one out. But the Beavers lined into a tough-luck double play to effectively end the threat.

Keen was solid for U-Mary as she went the distance, giving up five hits and just the one run. MSU's Jen Dixon suffered the loss despite giving up just four hits. She surrendered five run but three earned while striking out three.

No MSU player finished with multiple hits. Dixon was 1 for 1 with a pair of walked, while Friesen was 1 for 3 with an RBI.

The Beavers are scheduled for a pair of games at Valley City State Thursday.
