Beavers sweep Upper Iowa

MSU uses extra innings in game 1, earns first sweep of NSIC opponent this year

FAYETTE, Iowa – Minot State University pitchers Mandy Greenberg (Jr., P, Winnipeg, Manitoba) and Tiffany Friesen (Jr., P/3B, Morden, Manitoba) limited Upper Iowa to just three runs in 17 innings as the Beavers earned a road sweep of the Peacocks in nonconference NCAA Division II softball.

Greenberg outlasted Upper Iowa 2-1 in 10 innings in game 1 and Friesen tossed a five hitter in game 2, helping MSU to a 6-2 win and the sweep over a future Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference team. The Beavers are set to join the NSIC next season.

In game 1, MSU's Deanna Mitchell (Sr., 1B, Portage, Manitoba) singled home Kyla Thiesen (Sr., 2B, Brandon, Manitoba), who walked to lead off the inning, to break a 1-1 tie. The run helped complete a rally as the Beavers scored a run in the top of the seventh to force the extra innings.

The Peacocks' starter Brooklyn Koranda was solid through six innings, but gave up a leadoff double to Minot State's Maribel Casillas (Jr., OF, Murieta, Calif.) in the top of the seventh. She scored on a two-out single by Thiesen to tie the game.

The two runs were enough for Greenberg as she pitched around a hit batter to lead off the 10th and secure the win. Greenberg was excellent as she gave up the one run on seven hits in 10 innings pitched. She struck out 11 batters and walked just one to improve to 5-4.

Thiesen was the only player for MSU with multiple hits as she went 2 for 4 with a run scored and an RBI.

In game 2, the Beavers pushed to a 4-0 lead after a 3-run top of the fifth. MSU had three different players drive in a run as Friesen, Mitchell and Stacy Fournier (So., SS, Langley, British Columbia) all drove in runs.

Friesen was solid in the circle, giving up just five hits and two runs. She struck out six batters and didn't allow a walk to improve her record to 6-4 on the season.
Jen Dixon (So., OF/P, Brandon, Manitoba) and Mitchell had two hits apiece while Fournier drove in three and Friesen two.

MSU (12-10) travels to Northern State University for another pair of games against a future NSIC opponent Monday.
