ABERDEEN, S.D. – Minot State University exploded for five runs in the top of the 10th to complete another extra inning comeback – and another two-game sweep – over a future Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference team, as MSU took two from Northern State University Monday at Moccassin Creek.
MSU won game 1 8-3 in extra innings and defeated the Wolves 7-5 in the second game. MSU beat Upper Iowa in extra innings in game 1 and got the sweep Sunday. The Beavers will begin play next season in the Northern Sun. Minot State is currently on a four-game winning streak, has won 5 of its last 6 against Northern Sun teams and 10 of its past 12 overall.
The Beavers actually scored the game's final eight runs in game 1 as MSU trailed 3-0 entering the third inning. MSU scored a single run in the top of the third, tied the game in the top of the sixth and blew out the Wolves with five in the 10th.
MSU's
Stacy Fournier (So., SS, Langley, British Columbia) hit a two-run home run after
Tiffany Friesen (Jr., P/OF, Morden, Manitoba) walked to start the 10th inning. It was more than enough – even as the Beavers scored three more in the inning – for Friesen as she shut down the Wolves in the bottom of the inning.
In fact, Friesen was nearly unhittable in nine innings for relief, earning her seventh win of the season. She spelled starter
Mandy Greenberg (Jr., P, Winnipeg, Manitoba) in the bottom of the second and gave up just five hits, no runs and struck out four batters the rest of the way.
Fournier,
Katelyn Burns (Jr., SS, Cypress, Calif.),
Katie Backes (So., OF, Minot, N.D.) and
Melissa Bell (Fr., C, Belgrade, Mont.) all had two hits for MSU. Fournier and
Corinne Gautron (Jr., C, Winnipeg, Manitoba) each drove in two runs.
Friesen had an interesting line in game 2 as she was the starter for MSU, gave up four runs in two innings, was relieved by eventual winner
Keysha Jansen (Jr., P/OF, Melville, Saskatchewan) and pitched a 1-2-3 seventh for the save.
Jansen was solid in relief, pitching four innings, giving up just two hits and one run for the win.
The Beavers (14-10 overall) started its second comeback of the day, getting three runs in the fifth as Bell plated two with a single in the inning. The comeback was capped with three in the seventh as Fournier pushed across two with a single and
Deanna Mitchell (Sr., 1B, Portage, Manitoba) had an RBI.
Kyla Thiesen (Sr., 2B, Brandon, Manitoba) went 2 for 3 and was joined with two hits by
Maribel Casillas (Jr., OF, Murrieta, Calif.) and Fournier. Fournier and Bell both drove in two runs.
The Beavers finally get to play at home and will get to play six straight in Minot as MSU plays host to Mayville State Wednesday (2/4 p.m.) and the University of Regina Friday (3/5 p.m.) and Saturday (1/3 p.m.) all at South Hill Complex.
