MINOT, N.D. – Minot State University's
Kyla Thiesen (Sr., 2B, Brandon, Manitoba) set the tone right from the start.
Thiesen opened game 1 with a leadoff home run and the Beavers continued to smash the ball in a pair of wins over the University of Regina in nonconference NCAA softball Saturday at South Hill Complex.
The Beavers (20-10 overall) scored 27 runs to make it 61 for the weekend, topping Regina 13-0 and 14-3. MSU has won 10 straight games.
Game 1 looked like it was going to be a little tighter than the rest of the weekend as Regina's Cassandra Ash gave up just four runs through three innings. But Minot State poured it on in the fourth, scoring nine runs in the inning.
The top of the order was strong in game 1 as Thiesen,
Melissa Bell (Fr., C, Belgrade, Mont.) and
Jen Dixon (So., OF/P, Brandon, Manitoba) combined to go 6 for 9 with two home runs, 9 RBIs and five runs scored. Thiesen was 3 for 3 with three RBIs, while Bell drove in four and Dixon added a home run and two driven in.
While the Beavers scored 13, starter
Tiffany Friesen (Jr., P/3B, Morden, Manitoba) needed just one as she twirled a five-inning no-hitter. She was nearly perfect as she carried a perfect game into the fifth before the Beavers made an error. She struck out nine batters in the contest.
The scenario was reversed in game 2 as the Beavers put up a nine-spot in the bottom of the first inning, building a 11-0 lead after two innings.
Maribel Casillas (Jr., OF, Murrieta, Calif.) provided the pop in the second game, drilling two home runs and driving in five in the game.
Emily Fournier (So., INF, Langley, British Columbia) was 2 for 2 and scored two runs, while
Colleen Bertrand (So., C, Langley, British Columbia) went 2 for 3 with an RBI for the Beavers.
Keysha Jansen (Jr., P/OF, Melville, Saskatchewan) picked up her second win in as many days, going five innings, while giving up six hits and three runs.
MSU continues its home stand as the Beavers take on former Dakota Athletic Conference foe Valley City State Wednesday (2/4 p.m.) at South Hill Complex.
