RECORDS: Minot State enters the weekend's duals with a 1-9 overall record and a 0-3 record in conference. St. Cloud State is 13-1 overall and 2-0 in the NSIC while Upper Iowa is 11-1-1 overall and a perfect 3-0 in Northern Sun duals.
COACHES CORNER: Minot State head coach
Robin Ersland is in his fourth season at the front of the Beaver wrestling program. Ersland, a 2010 inductee into the NCAA Division II Wrestling Hall of Fame, has a career record of 217-282-7 in 29 seasons as a head coach. He has coached ninety-nine NCAA Division II National Qualifiers and 47 Division II All-Americans. The Huskies are coached by Steve Costanzo who is in his eighth season as head coach of the SCSU wrestling program. Costanzo has a career record of 113-24 with the Huskies including three straight NCAA Division II National Runner Up honors. He has coached a total of 122 National Qualifiers, 60 All-Americans and five National Champions. The Peacocks are coached by Heath Grimm who is in his 14th season at Upper Iowa University. Grimm sports a record of 131-45-3 over his tenure while also leading the Peacocks to eight top-11 national finishes, including a second place finish in 2002l in which six Peacocks were named All-Americans.
RANKINGS: Minot State did not receive any votes in the latest, Jan. 15, 2014, NCAA Division II Wrestling Poll. St. Cloud State appeared at No. 3 in the poll while Upper Iowa climbed nearly ten spots to the No. 8 ranking.
RECENT HISTORY: Minot State picked up their first dual win of the season at the University of Nebraska-Kearney Duals on Jan. 18. The Beavers picked up the 35-13 win over Newman University. More recently, MISU wrestled an exhibition dual against University of Regina in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan. Minot State defeated the Cougars 26-15. St. Cloud State has won six duals in a row and won two Northern Sun duals a weekend ago. SCSU beat Northern State 41-3 on Friday Jan. 24 and then took down Minnesota State University Moorhead 32-7. Upper Iowa has won four consecutive duals including a pair of wins of NSIC opponents last weekend. UIU beat Northern State 47-0 on Jan. 25 before taking down Southwest Minnesota State University 27-9 in Dorman Gymnasium.
NOTING THE HUSKIES: St. Cloud State has won the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference and placed second overall at the NCAA Division II National Championships each of the last three seasons. This season SCSU is hoping take it a step further and the pieces seem to be in place. The Huskies have three wrestlers ranked nationally at their respective weight classes; Clint Poster (20-6) is No. 4 at 157 pounds, Gabe Fogarty (3-2) is No. 2 at 165 pounds while freshman Austin Goergen (22-4) is No. 4 at 285 pounds.
NOTING THE PEACOCKS: Last season Upper Iowa wrestling made a splash at the NCAA Division II National Championships, claiming fifth place overall including four All-Americans. 2013 National Runner Up Blake Sorensen is off to a solid start with a 13-5 overall record while redshirt freshman Colbey Vance is off to a solid start to his collegiate career with a 28-13 overall record at 174 pounds. UIU's Edwin Cooper is having a fantastic season with a 31-2 overall record while returning All-American Carl Broghammer is 30-2.
FANTASTIC FRESHMAN: Three freshman have made significant contributions to the Minot State wrestling program this season.
Zachary Cummings (Fr., 149, Birmingham, Ala.),
Mitchell Eull (Fr., 197, Buffalo, Minn.) and
Tiger Paasch (Fr., 174, McMinnville, Ore.) have combined for 33 wins, 57 takedowns and 38 team points.
EYE OF THE TIGER:
Tiger Paasch (Fr., 174, McMinnville, Ore.) has had a stellar freshman year. He leads the team with eight wins by fall. Two of those wins by fall came in the UNK Duals on Jan. 18. Paasch pinned Juan Ortiz from Newman University in just 61 seconds before he pinned Adams State's Mark Mabry in 1 minute, 46 seconds.
DOMINANT DOUGLAS: With a 3-1 record at the UNK Duals,
Joshua Douglas (Jr., 133, Kissimmee, Fla.) improved his overall record to 11-9. After losing by tech. fall in his opening bout of the duals, Douglas rattled off two wins by fall and then in his final bout he won 16-0 (tech. fall) over Adams State's Martin Ramirez.
BARTZ BOUNCES BACK: Minot State senior
Bobby Bartz (HWT, Harvey, N.D.) only wrestled in two bouts during the University of Nebraska-Kearney Duals. In his first Bartz was beat by technical fall, 11-1, by Newman University's Lorenzo Serna. Bartz then rebounded with a nice win over Adams State's Tuli Laulu in four minutes, 29 seconds.
COLLEGE CONNECTION: Minot State head coach
Robin Ersland shares at common background with Upper Iowa's coaching staff as he and IUI head coach Heath Grimm and Peacocks' assistant coach Nate Skaar all graduated from Luther College. They all achieved succes at various times while at Luther as well. Grimm was a National Champion and Skaar was a national runner up. Ersland, however, won team championships in both wrestling and football during his time at Luther.
BY THE NUMBERS
130: MISU has amassed 130 team points through ten duals this season. All of last season the Beavers scored 175 points throughout 16 duals.
202: As a team, the Beavers have already recorded 202 takedowns, showing much more aggression and execution than last season when the recorded just 168 takedowns throughout the entire season.
6: Minot Sate has six wrestlers on the roster with 10 or more takedowns on the season as they are just ten duals into the year. A season ago, MISU had six wrestlers reach that mark after 16 duals.
