Minot State churned up by No. 3 St. Cloud State

Minot State can't compete with ranked Huskies on the mat

MINOT, N.D. – Minot State University dropped all nine contested matches in a variety of ways as No. 3 St. Cloud State shut out the Beavers 49-0 in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference wrestling Friday at the Minot State Dome.

The Beavers (1-10 overall, 0-4 NSIC) tried to use some aggressive neutral action and found some success with four takedowns in the match, including two by freshman Tiger Paasch (McMinnville, Ore.).

But each time the Beavers looked to have an opening; the Huskies (14-1, 3-0) would grind down Minot State on the mat.

"They killed us on the mat," said MISU head coach Robin Ersland. "We can't get away because we don't have anyone who can ride. You get better on the bottom when you have someone who can ride in practice we don't have that. The guys who need to get better, aren't getting better. Our guys think they are good on the bottom, because the other guys can't ride them."

Minot State had early leads in Joshua Douglas' (Jr., Kissimmee, Fla.) match at 133 pounds as Douglas earned a takedown and nearfall of SCSU's Zach Stewart. But Stewart gained a reversal early and one late and added penalty points and riding time for a 6-4 win.

"All the better teams are good on the mat – they get away, ride a little – nobody depends on just their feet," Ersland said. "That's when upsets happen when you can grind away some matches. Right now, we just can't get that and we can't seem to get away."

Ricard Avakovs (So., Riga, Latvia) also had a similar match at 157 where he earned a takedown and nearfall, but Clint Poster of SCSU gained a reverse and subsequent pin.

"We didn't quit, but this match wrestling stuff has been frustrating," said Ersland. "We work on it all the time, but it isn't carrying over and it's not sinking in. Before we can make the next step as a program, we need to figure that out."

The Poster pin at 157 was one of four earned by the Huskies as Tanner Johnshoy, Mike Rhone and Clayton Jennissen joined Poster with falls.

Paasch ended up losing 13-4 to SCSU's Dylon Braun 13-4, but led the Beavers with two takedowns at 184.

It won't get much easier for the Beavers Saturday night as Minot State plays host to No. 8 Upper Iowa beginning at 7 p.m. at the Minot State Dome.
