THIS WEEK: Coming off their first ever Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference dual win, the Minot State University wrestling team will look to keep the momentum going as they host Northern State in the NSIC dual finale. The Beavers will host the Wolves at 7 p.m. on Wednesday Feb. 12 in the Minot State Dome.
RECORDS: Minot State will enter the weekend's duals with a 1-12 overall record and a 1-6 record in conference while Northern State will bring in a 4-9 overall dual record but the Wolves remain winless with an 0-5 in the NSIC.
COACHES CORNER: Minot State head coach
Robin Ersland is in his fourth season at the front of the Beaver wrestling program. Ersland, a 2010 inductee into the NCAA Division II Wrestling Hall of Fame, has a career record of 219-285-7 in 29 seasons as a head coach. He has coached ninety-nine NCAA Division II National Qualifiers and forty-seven Division II All-Americans. The Wolves are coached by Pat Timm who is in his 13th season as head coach of the NSU wrestling program. Over his tenure the Wolves are 67-100-1 while coaching athletes to two national championships, 10 All-Americans, 21 Academic All-Americans, 34 National Qualifier, and 30 All-Conference awards.
RANKINGS: Neither Minot State or Northern State received any votes in the Jan. 31 NCAA Division II Wrestling Poll. The NSIC did have four teams receive votes in the poll led by No. 4, a three-time NCAA Division II Runner Up, St. Cloud State University.
RECENT HISTORY: Minot State split their two road duals this past week as they fell to Minnesota State University Moorhead 30-12 on Thursday Feb. 6 before picking up their first ever NSIC win over rival University of Mary, 21-18. Northern State also went 1-1 this past weekend, however their win came against a non-conference opponent. On Friday Feb. 6 NSU beat Dickinson State 27-21 before they lost to Southwest Minnesota State University 42-3 on Saturday night.
NOTING THE WOLVES: For the first time in head coach Pat Timm's tenure, the Northern State wrestling program is on the verge of having a winless season in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference duals. NSU is 0-5 in conference duals this season and has lost by an average of 39.6 to 5 in those matches. Antony Bruno and Ian Muirhead lead the Wolves at the lower weight classes while Blake Lundgren is a four-year starter for NSU at 174 pounds.
FETTERLEY COMES UP CLUTH: With the score tied 18-18 heading to the final bout of 184 pounds, MISU sent out one their most experienced wrestler, senior
Matt Fetterley (174/184, Muskegon, Mich.), to bring home the win. He did just that as he beat U-Mary's Riley Nagel 6-4 to give his team their second win of the season. It was Fetterley's twelfth win of the season and gives him 18 team points.
DOWN WITH THE SICKNESS: Also playing a big part in the win over University of Mary was
Tiger Paasch (Fr., 174, McMinnville, Ore.). The true freshman, who was battled sickness all week, stepped up for his team and defeated University of Mary's Tom Devito, 13-11. Paasch leads the Beavers with eight wins by fall on the year.
LAST TIME VS. NORTHERN: During the 2012-13 season Minot State faced off against Northern State resulting in a 31-8 NSU win in Aberdeen, S.D.
Matt Fetterley (Sr., 174/184, Muskegon, Mich.) won his match over his NSU opponent last season but the difference in the match was two pins and two wins by tech. fall by the Wolves. If the Beavers can stay off their backs, they have a good chance against Northern State.
SENIOR SALUTE: Three Beaver wrestlers will be wrestling in their final home dual ever Wednesday night.
Donovan Williams (165, Greater Islap, N.Y.),
Matt Fetterley (174/184, Muskegon, Mich.) and
Bobby Bartz (HWT, Harvey, N.D.) will appear in their final duals in a Minot State uniform. Over their careers with MISU, these three have recorded41 wins and 12 wins by fall. Please come to the match against the Wolves and show your support.
