Box Score 2 WEST ST. PAUL, Minn. – Minot State University's revenge will have to wait another day.
The Beavers ended a three-game losing streak with an 8-0 shutout of Lincoln University in game 2, but fell 6-5 to No. 14 ranked Fort Hays State in the second game of the Duluth Invite Sunday at the WSP Athletic Center.
The loss was similar – although on a much lesser stage – to the dramatic win by FHSU last season to end the Beavers' run at the NCAA Central Regional in Fort Hays, Kan. The Beavers lost on a walkoff home run there in a 5-2 game. Minot State has one more crack at revenge as they play Fort Hays State at 9 a.m. in day 2 of the tournament.
"It was a hard-fought game and it's too bad someone had to lose," said MISU head coach
Bill Triplett. "The girls were really up for the game since what happened last year and we played really well overall. We gave it away after battling to a 5-3 lead, but made a bad decision and two runs scored on an error to tie it up."
Minot State (3-6 overall) jumped out to a 2-0 lead on FHSU on a two-run home run by
Katie Backes (Sr., UTL, Minot, N.D.) in the top of the second inning. FHSU tied the game in the third and took a 3-2 lead in the fifth.
The Beavers battled back to take the 5-3 lead as
Jordan Grant (Fr., CF, Adelnato, Calif.) tripled home two runs and
Rachel Burdette (Fr., UTL, Temecula, Calif.) scored Grant on a sacrifice fly.
"The freshmen played really well and that's nice to see for us," Triplett said. "We are giving all of these ranked teams all they can handle early on."
After FHSU tied the game in the seventh, they pushed across the winning run in the bottom of the eighth.
Alyssa Cornejo (Fr., P/2B, Riverside, Calif.) had two hits for the Beavers, while Backes and Grant drove in two. Minot State starting pitcher
Mindy Lorimor (Jr., P, Thurman, Iowa) pitched well enough to win, but suffered her second loss this year in the bottom half of the final inning to a ranked opponent. She went 7 2/3 innings, giving up 10 hits and six runs – three earned runs – striking out four.
Lorimor and Cornejo were nearly untouchable in the win over Lincoln University as they combined for a one-hitter. Lorimor went four innings, striking out four as she moved to 3-3 on the year.
Minot State gave her all the run support she needed in the first, scoring three in the first and adding two more in the second on a
Sarah Nicks (Fr., UTL, Grossmont, Calif.) home run. Grant and
Ali Cygan (Jr., SS, Bozeman, Mont.) finished with two hits apiece, while Nicks scored three runs.
Along with one more rematch with Fort Hays State, the Beavers are scheduled to play rival University of Mary at 1 p.m. in a nonconference game.
