RECORDS: Minot State will enter the weekend's duals with a 1-11 overall record and a 0-5 record in conference. Minnesota State University Moorhead sports a record of 5-8 overall record with a 2-3 mark in the NSIC while University of Mary is just 1-7 overall and a winless 0-4 in Northern Sun duals.
COACHES CORNER: Minot State head coach
Robin Ersland is in his fourth season at the front of the Beaver wrestling program. Ersland, a 2010 inductee into the NCAA Division II Wrestling Hall of Fame, has a career record of 218-284-7 in 29 seasons as a head coach. He has coached ninety-nine NCAA Division II National Qualifiers and forty-seven Division II All-Americans. The Dragons are coached by fifth year man Kris Nelson, who was a former National Champion and three-time All-American at North Dakota State University. As head coach of the Dragon program, Nelson has amassed a 30-44 overall dual record while coaching three All-Americans, several national qualifiers and four NSIC All-Academic selections. The Marauders are coached by Adam Aho, who is in his first season at the helm of University of Mary wrestling program. Aho, a 2009 graduate and four-year starter for North Dakota State University, spent the last two seasons at Minnesota State University. During his two years with MSU, he helped the Mavericks to a 15-12 dual mark and an eighth place finish at the 2012-13 NCAA Division II Championships.
RANKINGS: Minot State, Minnesota State University Moorhead and University of Mary did not receive any votes in the Jan. 31 NCAA Division II Wrestling Poll. The NSIC did have four teams receive votes in the poll led by No. 4, a three-time NCAA Division II Runner Up, St. Cloud State University.
RECENT HISTORY: Minot State lost two home duals to two of the top ranked teams in all of NCAA Division II. Friday Jan. 31 MISU was downed 49-0 by No. 4 St. Cloud State University. It was the second straight season SCSU has shutout the Beavers. Saturday Feb. 1, MISU bounced back and wrestled with better effort, but still fell to No. 7 Upper Iowa University 34-15. MSU Moorhead has lost four straight duals, including three straight in the Northern Sun. The Dragons most recently fell to cross-town rival Concordia College 28-7 in a non-conference dual on Feb. 4. The loss marks the fourth straight year MSU Moorhead has been downed by the Cobbers. The Marauders faced the same team the Beavers did this past weekend, as they went 0-2 against No. 4 SCSU and No. 7 UIU; both home duals for University of Mary.
NOTING THE DRAGONS: Starting the season 5-4 during duals, Minnesota State University Moorhead had their sights on finishing towards the top of the Northern Sun. However, four straight losses (three in NSIC duals) have derailed the Dragons' plans. During this four dual losing streak, MSU Moorhead has been pinned six times while only notching one pin for themselves. Junior Michael Joseph and senior Matt Lewellen lead the Dragons with a combined overall record of 45-21 at the 174 & 184 pound weight classes.
NOTING THE MARAUDERS: University of Mary, similar to Minot State, has only recorded a single victory during the 2013-14 season. In fact, both U-Mary and MISU defeated the same opponent, Newman University, for their only wins on the year. Trevor Johnson, a 141 pound senior, leads the Marauders with a 14-4 overall record this season while Jordan Hegel has been the only other U-Mary grappler to record a winning record with a 8-7 mark. Â
TOUGH ONE TO SWALLOW: Tied 1-1 against Upper Iowa's Brock Gobin with less than 20 seconds remaining the bout,
Matt Fetterley (Sr., 174/184, Muskegon, Mich.) looked to make his move to get his eleventh win of the year. However, Gobin used a nice bear hug to take down Fetterley for the win with just 14 seconds remaining. It was just the third time during his MISU dual career that Fetterley had been pinned.
BARTZ WASTES LITTLE TIME: In the final bout of the Feb. 1 dual against Upper Iowa University,
Bobby Bartz (Sr., HWT, Harvey, N.D) hardly used any time off the clock as he pinned his opponent in just 33 seconds. That was the fasted pin in Bartz's career at Minot State, as he now has seven wins by fall as a Beaver.
AVAKOVS THROWS IT IN REVERSE:
Ricard Avakovs (So., 157, Riga, Latvia) trailed 5-4 with under 30 seconds remaining in the bout. It was then that the sophomore made a nice move for a two-point takedown and three point near fall to secure the 9-5 win over UIU's Zac Benitz, who was ranked in the top eight in the NCAA Division II Central Region at 157 pounds.
TEAM POINTS LEADERS: Freshman
Tiger Paasch (174, McMinnville, Ore.) leads Minot State with 30 team points during the team's 12 duals during the 2013-14 season.
Joshua Douglas (Jr., 133, Kissimmee, Fla.) is right on his heels with 29 team points.
Bobby Bartz (Sr., HWT, Harvey, N.D.) is also in the mix for the team lead with 24 team points and just a 5-5 overall record.
BY THE NUMBERS
22: The Beavers have notched 22 wins by fall so far this season. That number is already an improvement from last season when MISU had just 19 wins by fall in 16 duals.
63:
Ricard Avakovs (So., 157, Riga, Latvia) has 63 takedowns during his sophomore season, that's an average on nearly two takedowns per bout, a top percentage on the team.
6: Minot Sate has six wrestlers on the roster with 10 or more takedowns on the season as they are just 12 duals into the year. A season ago, MISU had six wrestlers reach that mark after 16 duals.
