Beavers push win streak to five

Minot State wins twice on day 2 in Florida, move to 4-0 on trip

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 CLERMONT, Fla. – Minot State University held off Assumption College and then blew out Ursuline College to run its winning streak to five games, including the first four in Florida, as MISU won a pair of NCAA Division II games Saturday at the National Training Center Solftball Complex.

The Beavers (8-5 overall) finished with 24 hits and scored 20 runs to sweep Assumption College 5-4 and Ursuline College 15-2 (5). It was the second day in Florida for Minot State as they played two games Friday and then the two on Saturday.

"We played just well enough to win the Assumption game," said MISU head coach Bill Triplett. "In the Ursaline game, we gave up two runs in the first and then it was all MSU after that. Another great day with two wins."

Minot State had to hold on against Assumption as MISU built a 5-2 lead behind solo home runs by Rachel Burdette (Fr., P/UTL, Temecula, Calif.) and Melissa Bell (Jr., C, Belgrade, Mont.) along with RBIs by Ali Cygan (Jr., SS, Bozeman, Mont.), Jen Dixon (Sr., OF/P, Brandon, Manitoba) and Katie Backes (Sr., UTL, Minot, N.D.).

"We got a couple long balls from Burdette and Bell and that really helped out," Triplett said.

But Assumption (5-6) mounted a comeback with two runs in the seventh before Mindy Lorimor (Jr., P, Thurman, Iowa) locked down her sixth win on the season. She went the distance, giving up four runs and striking out two to improve to 6-3 in her first season with the Beavers.

"Mindy didn't have her best stuff," said Triplett. "But she battled and gave us just enough to get the win."

Minot State's top of the order was the difference as MISU's 1-4 hitters of Jordan Grant (Fr., CF, Adelnato, Calif.), Bell, Dixon and Cygan went a combined 8-for-15 with four RBIs and four runs scored.

In game 2, it was all Minot State after Ursuline scored two in the top of the first. UC opened with a 2-0 lead, but it was 5-2 after Minot State batted around in the bottom of the inning. The lead grew to 13-2 with eight in the third.

Dixon collected three hits, while Darlene Truong (Jr., C, Escondido, Calif.), Grant, Bell and Cygan all finished with two hits for the Beavers.

Dixon also settled in in the circle to earn her second win of the season, going four innings, while giving up the two runs and striking out three.

"Dixon is catching on fire with the bat and she's such a good hitter than when she gets hot, she gives us a huge lift," Triplett said. "She also threw pretty well today getting the win."

The Beavers have two more Sunday as they play Saint Michael's College at noon and Slippery Rock University at 4 p.m. before having Monday off.
