Box Score 2 CLERMONT, Fla. – Minot State University's
Jen Dixon (SR., OF/P, Brandon, Manitoba) smacked a two-out double scoring two runs in the top of the seventh to lift Minot State to a 2-1 win over the University of New Haven in the spring trip finale in NCAA Division II softball Wednesday.
The win helped the Beavers (13-5 overall) to two wins on the final day of the National Training Center Tournament, a perfect 9-0 record in Florida and the 10th straight win overall for Minot State. MISU topped Merrimack College 6-1 in the first game Wednesday.
"Another great day and what a trip again this year," said MISU head coach
Bill Triplett. "When our schedule got changed today and we found out we were going to play Merrimack and New Haven, we decided to play it like a postseason tournament and the gave the ball to Mindy (
Mindy Lorimor, Jr., P, Thurman, Iowa) in back to back games. She really proved that she can handle that."
Both Lorimor and New Haven pitcher Victoria Cabral locked in for an old fashioned pitcher's duel as neither gave up an earned run. UNH took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the sixth before Dixon's big hit in the seventh.
"Give Cabral a lot of credit," Triplett said. "She was really tough. She had a great change up and had us off stride."
In the seventh,
Darlene Truong (Jr., C, Escondido, Calif.) got the rally going as she drew a one-out walk.
Jordan Grant (Fr., CF, Adelnato, Calif.) reached on an error to set up the game-winning double. Dixon, who was 0-for-2 with a walk coming into the at bat, delivered the clutch double scoring both Grant and pinch runner
Jana Britz (Sr., OF, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan).
New Haven (6-2 overall), who received votes in the latest NCAA Division II Softball Poll, didn't go without a fight, getting a leadoff single and advancing to third before Lorimor shut the door. Lorimor, who was the winner in game 1 as well, went seven innings giving up seven hits and had a strikeout. She pitched 13 1/3 innings on the day, allowing just one earned run with two Ks.
"We didn't get down (after the run in the sixth) and got a couple runners on," Triplett said. "Dixon came through with a huge double off the wall to score both. Grant scored all the way from first."
MISU finished with just six hits against Cabal, but
Katie Backes (Sr., UTL, Minot, N.D.) had two, going 2-for-3 in the game.
Against Merrimack, the Beavers opened up a 3-0 lead after one and a 4-1 lead after two to improve to 12-5 at the time. MISU had six different players with a hit, led by Truong's 2-for-3 effort. She, Dixon,
Ali Cygan (Jr., SS, Bozeman, Mont.) and Backes all finished with one RBI, while
Stacy Fournier (Sr., 3B, Langley, British Columbia) knocked in two. The Beavers swiped four bases against Merrimack in the win.
Lorimor moved to 10-3 on the season with the two wins and earned six wins in Florida, while lowering her ERA from 1.51 to 1.30 in the process.
"Grant had a great trip for us as a freshman and she's really getting it done out of that lead-off spot," said Triplett. "And Darlene also had a great week. Hitting in the nine hole, she's set the table many times for the 1-2-3 hitters and that's what we need out of her. It was someone different every day down here this week. I think we grew a lot this week."
Minot State is set to start its 2014 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference season Tuesday with a double-header in Minot against rival University of Mary. While field conditions at both North Hill and South Hill Complexes are questionable for that date, MISU might play on the turf at Herb Parker Stadium. Continue to logon to
