Beavers drop two to UMD

Two big Minnesota Duluth innings spell trouble for Minot State

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 MINOT, N.D. – Minot State University had two bad innings in a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference softball double header against Minnesota Duluth, but it was enough to cost the Beavers as UMD rolled to a pair of wins Friday at Herb Parker Stadium.

The Beavers (24-14 overall, 11-9 NSIC) gave up four runs in the fourth inning in a 6-3 loss in game 1 and UMD (20-16, 7-5) put up sixth in the fifth inning to run away with a 7-2 win in game 2. Both losses came after Minot State jumped out to 2-0 leads.

In game 1, the Beavers got things going in the bottom of the second as Katie Backes (Sr., UTL, Minot, N.D.) drilled a two-run home run down the right field line.

But the Bulldogs bounced right back with a two-run homer of their own in the top of the third as Ashley Schilling hit a deep ball off the Beavers' starter Mindy Lorimor (Jr., P, Thurman, Iowa) to tie the game.

It stayed 2-2 until the sixth as UMD had back-to-back doubles as Jordan Rice Cayli Sadler each drove in runs and then Sami Schnyder plated two with a single to up the Bulldogs' lead to 6-2.

MISU got one in the back in the bottom of the sixth, but Mariah Schultz from UMD shut the door on any comeback.

Schnyder and Brooke Neuroth each had two hits for UMD, while Backes and Stacy Fournier (Sr., 3B, Langley, British Columbia) went 1-for-2 for MISU.

In game 2, the Beavers again scored two to lead 2-0 as Leyna Downey (Jr., P/1B, Missoula, Mont.) singled to score Backes and Melissa Bell (Jr., C, Belgrade, Mont.) plated Rachael Burdette (Fr., P/UTL, Temecula, Calif.) on a sacrifice fly.

But the Bulldogs got six in the fifth, partly due to three Minot State errors in the inning, and went on for the win. UMD limited Minot State to just five hits, while banging out 12 in the game and 21 in the series.

Dalyce Gustafson went 3-for-4 for UMD, while Schnyder, Megan Mullen and Hailey Lundquist all finished with two hits apiece. Mullen hit a solo home run for the Bulldogs. Cayli Sadler earned the win, going the distance and giving up five hits and two runs.

Minot State didn't have a player with two hits in the game. Bell was 1-for-2 with an RBI. Jen Dixon (Sr., OF/P, Brandon, Manitoba) suffered the loss in relief.

The Beavers will look to turn things around Saturday as they play host to St. Cloud State in a pair of NSIC games starting at 1 p.m. at Herb Parker Stadium.
