Turnovers, Viking 3s hurt Minot State

MSU starts both halves strong, can't hold on

MINOT, N.D. – It was a pair of nemeses for Minot State University that spelled trouble for the Beavers Saturday night.

MSU committed 21 turnovers and gave up 13 3-pointers as Augustana College turned a tight game into double-figure final with a big second half run in a 82-65 win in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference women's basketball at the MSU Dome.

"We did a couple things that were really positive tonight," said MSU head coach Sheila Green Gerding. "I thought we really didn't turn it over against the press for the first 32 minutes. And then as we got tired we started making mistakes against the press and that led to baskets for them."

Opposition 3-point shooting hasn't been big problem much of the season for the Beavers, but was on the weekend. Turnovers, however, have been an issue much of the conference season. On Saturday, the Vikings turned those 21 turnovers into 36 points.

The Beavers (9-13 overall, 4-12 NSIC) had a great start to the contest and led by as many as 11 points in the first nine minutes of the first half.

But the Vikings (15-8, 9-7) closed that quickly on 3-pointers and took a 40-30 lead at half. AC hit eight 3s in the first half. It remained close from there until the midway point of the second half when Augie started to pull away. The Vikings knocked down another five in the second.

"I thought we really hit the boards hard," Green Gerding said. "We had 21 offensive rebounds tonight. We had two kids with double-doubles. We tried to take away from the positive. They're a good team and they hit shots. We didn't. We had great looks and we didn't know them down all the time."

The duo with double-doubles was Katie Hardy (Sr., F, Fairview, N.D.), who had a resurgence on offense on the weekend, and Savana Kingsbury (Jr., F, Omaha, Neb.), who has had a great second half of the season. Hardy scored 13 points, pulled down 11 rebounds and added three assists, while Kingsbury finished with 14 points and 10 rebounds.

The Vikings had solid balance on offense with four in double figures and five with at least nine points. Logan O'Farrell and Shaunteva Ashley scored 18 points apiece, while Sydney Rome and Allie Koehn combined for eight 3-pointers and 15 and 13 points respectively.

Alex Haley (So., G, Libertyville, Ill.) led MSU with 17 points, while Diondra Denton (So., G, Great Falls, Mont.) added 12 points and six rebounds.

The Beavers head out of the road for two games this weekend, traveling to Concordia-St. Paul and Minnesota State Friday and Saturday.
