KEARNEY, NEB. – The Minot State University wrestling team found it difficult to get much going in its four duals on Saturday. Seeing some individual success didn't make up for the problems the team faced in their lineups.
With a 39-10 loss to Chadron State the day didn't get better as the Beavers dropped to Colorado School of Mines 30-11. In the next match MSU lost a tie breaker to Newman to fall 22-21 and ended the day 0-4 with a final of 30-11 against Colorado State-Pueblo.
"We had a tough day today," said head coach
Evan Forde. "We saw some pretty good teams, but injuries and weight management hurt us again. Our dual with Newman University came down to the 4th tie breaker criteria. Things just weren't going our way today."
Marcus Polak (157, Sr., Minot, N.D.) was a highlight for the Beavers, however winning three of his four matches, including a pin in the first dual against Chadron State.
Mitchell Eull (HWT, Jr., Buffalo, Minn.) picked up 17 team points for MSU, 12 coming from forfeits, before being pinned by the No. 4 wrestler in his weight class, Jacob Mitchell.
Tanner Crissler (141, So.) and his fellow Belcourt, N.D. native
Briley Crissler (184, So.) each earned two victories on the day.
In the most competitive match of the day, against Newman, points went back and forth between the two teams as Newman took a 9-0 lead after a forfeit and loss from Minot State. The Beavers then won four matches in a row from
Tanner Crissler,
Cody Haugen (149, So., Minot, N.D.), and Polak to take a 15-9 lead. Winning the next three Newman went up by six points before having to forfeit in the heavyweight class. The Jets ended up taking the victory home as they were rewarded with the tie breaker.
Minot State will return home to take on the University of Jamestown on January 26 at the MSU Dome. The dual is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
