BISMARCK, N.D. – Minot State University couldn't overcome four University of Mary pins and fell to the Marauders 37-10 in the first Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference dual of the New Year Thursday at McDowell Activities Center.
The Beavers (3-4 overall, 0-3 NSIC) struggled out of the gate with a forfeit at 125 pounds and losses at 133 and 141 to trail U-Mary 15-0 after three bouts.
"I've got to give the University of Mary credit tonight. They were aggressive and captialized on our mistakes," said MSU head coach
Evan Forde. "We had a few guys wrestle well, but for the most part we had a poor effort. We let our weight management affect us going into the dual. It was a disappointing night."
It wasn't until Minot State's
Cody Haugen (So., Minot, N.D.) ran away with his match over Jakob Weisbrod, 7-3 at 149 that MSU got on the board. Haugen pushed his record to an even 9-9 on the season with the win.
MSU was still in the match after
Marcus Polak (Sr., Minot, N.D.) earned a major decision over Paul Michaelson at 165. The Beavers trailed 21-7 with the four points from Polak, who moved up a weight class to stop Michaelson 14-6. Polak jumped a match over .500 with his win and stands at 9-8 on the season.
But the Beavers gave up late pins at 174 and 184 and lost a major decision to end any comeback chance.
MSU's
Mitchell Eull (Jr., Buffalo, Minn.) ended the scoring for Minot State with a 4-1 win at heavyweight, running his record to 14-6 on the season.
The match, which counted as the team's NSIC match this season, was a stark contrast to the back-and-forth affair at the MSU Dome a month ago in nonconference wrestling. The Beavers needed a pair of wins in the final two weights to edge the Marauders 18-16. The win for U-Mary is the fourth straight for the home team in the series and snapped MSU's two match conference winning streak against the Marauders.
The Beavers will look to regroup as they travel to Kearney, Neb., for the Midwest Duals hosted by Nebraksa-Kearney, Jan. 16.
