MINOT, N.D. -- The Minot State football team concludes a two-game homestand this weekend as it hosts Bemidji State in a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference game at 1 p.m. in Herb Parker Stadium.
In two of the three Minot State home games this season, the Beavers have had the ball late in the fourth quarter with an opportunity to tie the game but have come up short. Minot State will look to get its breakthrough home victory this Saturday against Bemidji State.
Last Thursday, Minot State fell behind Northern State 27-5 at halftime before staging a second-half rally. The Beavers got a 1-yard touchdown run from
Cade Hernandez and a 21-yard interception return for a touchdown by
Justin Gonzales to climb to within 27-19 in the fourth quarter, but the Beavers failed to get the equalizer on either of their next two drives.
Gonzales, who leads Minot State with three interceptions on the year, also had an interception in the second quarter of the game against Northern State.
Kiante Goudeau, who finished with nine tackles against the Wolves, blocked an extra-point attempt in the second quarter and scooped it up and raced into the end zone for two points for the Beavers.
Donnell Vercher led Minot State with 12 tackles and currently ranks fourth in the NSIC in tackles per game, while
Matt Marler added 10 tackles.
Bryce Broome finished with 10 tackles and a Minot State season-high 2.5 tackles for loss against Northern State.
Zac Cunha and
Andy Jones split time at quarterback for the Beavers. Cunha was 8-of-14 for 80 yards, while Jones finished the game 6-of-12 for 72 yards.
Ryan Fila led the Beavers with five receptions for 50 yards, while
Taylor Maloney and
Lavante Bushnell each had three receptions.
Larry Overstreet, who is ranked sixth in the NSIC averaging 75.4 yards rushing per game, had 46 yards against Northern State.
Bemidji State, which is 4-2 overall and 2-0 in the NSIC North Division, brings a three-game winning streak into Saturday's game. The Beavers defeated Mary 45-19 last week to extend their winning streak to three straight.
Saturday will also mark Hall of Fame Weekend at Minot State as Nick Banks, Janessa (Penner) Wilson and Kendra Meyer will be formally inducted into the MSU Hall of Fame.
