MINOT, N.D. -- The Minot State football team wraps up a two-game road swing on Saturday (Oct. 28) when it visits Minnesota Crookston for a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference contest at 1 p.m. at Ed Widseth Stadium.
The Beavers enter the contest with a 1-7 overall record and a 1-3 record in the NSIC North, while Minnesota Crookston is 0-8 overall and 0-4 in the NSIC North.
The Golden Eagles may provide exactly what Minot State needs in order to secure its second victory of the season. Minnesota Crookston is ranked last in the NSIC in both scoring offense (10.0) and scoring defense (44.4), but regardless of where the Golden Eagles are ranked the Beavers will need to play better on both sides of the ball.
Minot State is coming off of a 37-0 loss at Minnesota Duluth, while Minnesota Crookston lost to Minnesota Moorhead 49-7 last Saturday.
The Beavers offense will look to get untracked against Minnesota Crookston after scoring a combined 14 points in the last two games. Junior
Andy Jones and senior
Zac Cunha continue to share the quarterbacking duties for the Beavers. Jones has rushed for 98 yards and thrown for 274 more yards, while Cunha has 1,109 yards passing and has tossed five touchdowns.
Led by senior
Larry Overstreet, the Beavers have rushed for over 100 yards in three of the last four games and hope to pad those numbers against a Minnesota Crookston defense that is allowing 292.3 rushing yards per game.
The Golden Eagles pass defense is allowing 244.9 yards per game and Beaver receivers
Lavante Bushnell,
Ryan Fila,
Lane Torgerson and
Taylor Maloney will look to take advantage. Bushnell leads Minot State with 26 catches for 327 yards and three touchdowns, while Fila and Torgerson each have 17 catches.
Defensively, Minot State ranks second in the NSICÂ allowing 153.3 yards passing per game but are 14th in the conference against the run permitting 257.8 yards per game.
The Beavers have been led by the defensive backfield of
Bryce Broome,
Donnell Vercher,
Kiante Goudeau and
Justin Gonzales. Broome ranks third in the NSICÂ in tackles per game, while Vercher is ranked fifth in the conference. Gonzales leads MSU with three interceptions, while Goudeau and Broome each have two interceptions.
Minot State leads the all-time series with the Golden Eagles 6-4 and has won four of the last five meetings between the two teams.
Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m. and the game can be seen and heard live on www.msubeavers.com
