Beavers Seek History Versus Yellowstone Christian

MINOT, N.D. -- The Minot State men's basketball team will attempt to do something that no other Beaver team has done in the last 42 years on Wednesday (Nov. 22) when it hosts Yellowstone Christian, which is start the season with a 6-0 record.

The Beavers are currently tied with the 2013-14 edition of Minot State basketball as the only teams to start the year with a 5-0 record in the last 42 seasons. Records prior to the 1976-77 season are incomplete.

Minot State is coming off another dominant victory on Monday where it defeated Valley City State 84-71. The Beavers got 22 points from senior Tyler Rudolph, while Russ Davis scored 17 points and David Akibo added 16 points. For Rudolph it marked the 70th double-figure scoring game of his career and his 21st consecutive game in which he has reached double digits in scoring.

Senior Luis Ricci Maia was nearly flawless in directing the offense as the notched a career-high 10 assists and had only two turnovers. After being held without an assist in the Beavers season opener against Southern Arkansas, Ricci Maia has piled up 29 assists and is averaging 7.3 assists per game in the last three contests.

Davis has been red-hot from the three-point line in the last two games as he is shooting a blistering 58.8 percent from beyond the arc having made 10 of his last 17 three-point attempts. He has made at least three three-point field goals in four of the Beavers five games on the season.

Led by Ricci Maia, Minot State has turned the ball over only 18 times in the last three games and has only 48 for the season.

While the offense has done its part, it's the Minot State defense that has carried the team. The Beavers rank first in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference in scoring defense (60.0) and field goal percentage defense (.399) and third in the conference in three-point field goal percentage defense (.271) and blocked shots (3.6).

Yellowstone Christian enters the game with an 8-3 overall record, while the Beavers bring their unblemished mark of 5-0 into the contest. This will mark the first career meeting between the two teams.
