BISMARCK, N.D. - Minot State wrestler
Nathan Baca battled until the end against UMary's Anthony Velazquez (157 lb) in the final match of the dual but the decision (8-7) went the Marauders way 24-20 on Thursday night in Bismarck, N.D.
The Beavers at one point trailed 12-0 after UMary started off the dual with back-to-back pins. Braydon Huber defeated
Brody Mohr by fall and Max Bruss won by fall over
Noah Gallardo to extend the Marauders lead to that marking.Â
Keegan Berry scored early and was able to hold on to a 6-1 decision over Grant Litke. Berry continues to be one of the most consistent grapplers in the lineup as he moves to 4-0 on the season at 184 lbs. The Berry win cut the deficit to nine points 12-3 as the Beavers got on the scoreboard for the first time in the dual.Â
UMary extended its lead back to 12 after Matt Kaylor defeated
Dustin Swisher by decision (3-0). MSU then went on a run to grapple its way back into the dual.
Jordan Will moved to 3-1 on the year with a 5-0 decision over Emmitt Brooks in the first matchup between those two heavyweights this season.Â
Oscar Nellis continues to dominate at 125 lb., with his first technical fall of the season and a 14-3 comfortable win over Jeremy Leintz to cut the deficit to four, 15-11.Â
A pivotal moment in the match came next for the Beavers as
Kelby Armstrong grappled through a tight 4-3 decision win over Laken Boese cutting UMary's lead to just one point, 15-14.Â
Lincoln Stormer put the Beavers in the lead for the first time during the dual with a win by pin-fall over Drew Steidler moving his team in front 20-15.Â
The Marauders retook the lead with an apparent injury to
Shadi Mitwalli who could not finish his match against Chandler Mooney. The score was 21-20 going into the final match with
Nathan Baca facing Anthony Velazquez at 157Â lb.
Baca grabbed an early 2-0 lead with a takedown and extended his lead to 4-2 after he recorded another takedown but Velazquez was able to get on the board with a reversal. The final match continued to go back and forth until Velazquez outlasted Baca for an 8-7 decision to give UMary a four-point win.Â
