DICKINSON, ND- The Minot State women's basketball team opened the 2021 season with an exhilarating 63-56 victory over the Dickinson State University Blue Hawks.
The Beavers were off to a slow start as the score was tied 13-13 after the first quarter. The women took a slight edge heading into halftime, as they outscored the Hawks in the second quarter 14-13. Minot State began to pull away as they closed the third quarter out with a comfortable 40-34 lead over the Hawks. The Beavers finished off Dickinson State by outscoring them 23-22 in the fourth quarter, to win by 7.
The Beavers were led by Natasha Elliott and Amber Stevahn with 14 points each. Following right behind the stars of the game was Anna Counts with 13 points on the day. Minot State won the defensive battle with 49 total rebounds, as Counts led the team with 6 rebounds. Kate Head took charge with 4 steals to build momentum for the Beavers, while tacking on 12 points for the day.
The Hawks were led by Kailyn Groves with 18 points and 10 rebounds in the game. Lauren Baumberger finished with 11 points and eight rebounds, with three of them coming on the offensive side for Dickinson State.
The Minot State women's basketball team look to continue building momentum as they open preseason play on Nov. 5. The Beavers will square-off against Montana State University Billings in the D2CCA Tip-off at the Trailhead.
