DULUTH, MN --The Minot State women's basketball team held Minnesota-Duluth to just 20 percent from deep in a 4-for-20 shooting performance, but fell 72-54 to the Bulldogs on the road Friday.
The Beavers (4-7, 2-2) had four players score in double figures, led by Amber Stevahn, who had 16 points and three steals. Anna Counts added 11 points and six rebounds and Calli Delsman helped out with 11 points off of the bench.
Led by Counts' three offensive rebounds, Minot State did a great job crashing the offensive glass, pulling down 14 boards that resulted in eight second chance points.
Minot State's defense held Minnesota-Duluth to only 20 percent shooting from beyond the arc.
How It Happened
Minot State struggled out of the gate, falling behind 16-8 at the end of the first quarter.
The Beavers continued to lose ground in the second quarter and faced a 40-17 halftime deficit.
Minot State came out of halftime on fire, going on a 7-0 run, punctuated by a three from Janie Wunderlich, to trim its deficit to 40-24 with 7:01 to go in the third. Minnesota-Duluth countered and stretched its lead to 56-34 heading into the fourth. Minot State played well near the basket, scoring 12 of its 17 points in the paint.
Minnesota-Duluth kept widening its lead in the fourth, constructing a 69-44 advantage before Minot State went on a 6-0 run, finished off by Wunderlich's three, to shrink the deficit to 69-50 with 2:54 to go in the contest. The Beavers kept their comeback going, but Minnesota-Duluth managed to hold on for the 72-54 win. Minot State fired away from deep in the quarter, knocking down three shots to account for nine of its 20 points.
