Stevahn scores 20 points but Minot State falls to visiting Bemidji State

MINOT, N.D. -- Amber Stevahn totaled 20 points, but the Minot State women's basketball team fell to the Bemidji State Beavers, 73-62, at home Saturday in NSIC women's basketball action.

Stevahn led the Beavers (5-9 overall, 3-4 NSIC) with 20 points and eight rebounds. Janie Wunderlich also added nine points, nine rebounds, and two steals, and Anna Counts chipped in as well with eight points and two steals.

Wunderlich pulled down four offensive rebounds to pace an offense that racked up second-chance opportunities for Minot State, grabbing 11 boards and turning them into 11 second-chance points.

Minot State forced 20 Bemidji State turnovers while committing 16 themselves in Saturday's game. The Beavers turned those takeaways into 22 points on the other end of the floor. Counts' two steals led the way for Minot State.

How It Happened

Minot State started out the scoring by going on a 7-0 run, culminating in a bucket from Stevahn, to take an early lead with 7:50 left in the first quarter. The Beavers then lost some of that lead, but still entered the quarter break with a 24-19 advantage. Minot State did most of its first quarter damage in the paint, scoring 14 of its 24 points close to the basket.

The Beavers could not maintain their lead in the second quarter and entered halftime trailing 43-38.

Minot State's deficit continued to grow after halftime, and the Beavers faced a 56-46 disadvantage heading to the fourth quarter. Minot State played well near the basket, scoring four of its eight points in the paint.

Bemidji State kept widening its lead in the fourth, constructing a 61-46 advantage before Minot State went on a 6-0 run to shrink the deficit to 61-52 with 4:38 to go in the contest. Bemidji State responded and outscored the Beavers the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 73-62. Minot State took advantage of nine Bemidji State turnovers in the quarter, scoring 10 points off of those takeaways.
