MINOT, ND --Amber Stevahn scored 20 points, but the Minot State women's basketball team fell to the Augustana (SD) Vikings 79-71 at home Friday.
Stevahn added nine rebounds and five assists to her 20 point game to lead the Beavers (5-10, 3-5). Anna Counts helped out with a double double of 10 points and 15 rebounds and Kate Head chipped in with 13 points.
How It Happened
After falling behind 4-2, Minot State went on a 5-0 run with 8:17 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Stevahn, to take a 7-4 lead. The Beavers then surrendered that lead and entered the second quarter down 19-17.
Augustana (SD) kept adding to that lead, building a 35-25 advantage before Minot State went on an 8-0 run, highlighted by a bucket from Janie Wunderlich, to narrow its deficit to 35-33. The Beavers continued to chip away, reducing the Augustana (SD) lead to 41-40 heading into the break.
The Vikings continued to increase the lead after halftime, building a 44-40 advantage before Minot State went on a 9-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Wunderlich, to grab a 49-44 lead with 5:30 to go in the third. Augustana (SD) responded to seize a 58-56 lead entering the fourth quarter. Minot State played well near the basket, scoring eight of its 16 points in the paint.
Augustana (SD) kept widening its lead in the fourth, constructing a 70-66 advantage before Minot State went on a 5-0 run, finished off by Kennedy Harris' three, to take a 71-70 lead with 2:22 to go in the contest. The Vikings re-asserted control, outscoring the Beavers 9-0 the rest of the way to hand Minot State the 79-71 loss. Minot State took advantage of two Augustana (SD) turnovers in the quarter, scoring four points off of those takeaways.
