MOORHEAD, MINN.- The Minot State Beavers men's wrestling team had a quick turn-around from their joust with the Northern State Wolves Friday night, as they participated in the Dragon Open today, hosted by Minnesota State University at Moorhead.
MSU had a very solid overall team performance as 12 Beavers had a podium finish, including two champions freshmen
Brendan Barnes of the white division 149-pound bracket and for the second week in a row
Jake Swirple of the red division 285-pound bracket.
In the red division 125-pound bracket sophomore
Logen Fischer nabbed 5
th place while garnering nine team points thanks to a fall at the 2:55 mark over
Thomas Hardy of Northland Community and Technical College. He rounded out his day securing 5
th place with an 8-7 victory over
Julian Perez of division one North Dakota state.
Continuing in the red division, now in the 141-pound bracket freshman
Ethan Wonser also secured 5
th place but gathered 11.5 points. Wonser got the fall at the 4:02 mark over Concordia-Moorhead's
Gabriel Bellefeuille. He rounded out his afternoon with a 12-8 decision over Minnesota West Community and Technical Colleges'
Jacob Vogel.
Minot native freshman
Kelby Armstrong also competed in the 141-pound bracket in the red division, but he took the silver nabbing 17.5 team points. He started off his day with a fall at the 6:25 mark over host MSU Moorheads'
Parker Benz. He followed it up with a technical fall, 15-0 score over Bellefeuille of Concordia. He made his way to the championship match defeating a member of the number one team in the nation in division two,
Augustus Donovan of St. Cloud State via a 10-1 decision. Armstrong battled against
Gabriel Schummof NDSU for the championship only to see Schumm slip by with a score of 6-4.
Sophomore
Alex Sandoval took home 6
th place while receiving nine team points on the day. Sandoval took down teammate
Isaac Bertalotto with a fall at the 4:26 mark, which he followed up with a victory via medical forfeit over
Nathan Langer of St. John's University of Minnesota.
The battle for the red division heavyweight crown fell between two Beavers; Swirple and senior
Jordan Will.
Will wound up taking second, but he nabbed 15 team points on his way. Will took down wrestler
Emmitt Brooks from rival Mary by a 5-0 score, which he followed up with 4-1 victory over Northern States'
Joshua Trumble (who Swirple defeated on Friday in the heavyweight matchup against the Wolves.)
Swirple took first and brought home 19 team points in the process. Swirple defeated
Jake Erckenbrack from host MSU Moorhead by a 7-3 score. Swirple then advanced to the championship match against Will via a medical forfeit from
Michael Loyola of Northern State. Swirple then secured the victory over teammate Will in sudden victory one by a score of 3-1.
Onto the white division.
Freshman
Robert Lowdog Jr. finished 5
th in the white division 149-pound bracket and brought home 12 team points. Lowdog started his day off with an 8-1 decision over
Kyler Grems of Minnesota West C and T. Lowdog stayed in the running for a podium spot by securing the fall at the 5:59 mark over
Wyatt Schneider of Mary. Lowdog advanced due to a medical forfeit from
Gideon Cole of Southwest Oregon Community College, and rounded out his night in thrilling fashion, a 3-1 sudden victory one win over
Tyler Soltau of Southwest Minnesota State to secure 5
th.
In the 165-pound bracket freshman
Cannon Potts took home bronze while nabbing 12 team points on the day. He started with a 5-2 victory over
Tyler Voorhees of Northern State before nabbing the 15-0 technical fall over Northland C and Ts'
Anthony Widmer. Potts again got the best of Voorhees 15-13 to secure his 3
rd place finish.
Freshman
Kaleb Smith snuck onto the podium securing 6
th place, while also bringing home five team points in the 174-pound bracket. Smith's lone victory due to an injury in the second match ending his day was a 9-5 decision victory over
Jaykob Mills of Concordia.
Amarillo, Texas freshman
Kale Farrington brought home 3
rd place in the 174-pound bracket, while also taking with him 14 team points. Farrington advanced to the 3
rd place match due to a medical forfeit from teammate Smith, but in that 3
rd place dual, Farrington took out Concordias'
Jaykob Mills with a 5-2 score.
Freshman
Rourke Martin who was the lone Beaver to win an exhibition dual against Northern State on Friday continued his hot streak by nabbing 5
th and gaining eight team points thanks to the medical forfeit from teammate Smith.
The lone Beaver winner in the white division freshman Barnes took the gold in the 149-pound bracket. Barnes started off with a fall at the 57 second mark over Schneider of Mary before nabbing another fall at the 1:04 mark over host MSU Moorheads'
Jacob Cole. Barnes continued his fall streak by gaining two more to secure the 1
st place finish; over
Alex Backes of Concordia Moorhead at the 4:19 mark and over David Platt of Concordia as well at the 1:17 mark.
The Beavers will head back to Minot to take on rival the University of Mary Marauders in non-conference play at the MSU Dome Friday Dec. 10
th at 7 p.m.
