MINOT, N.D. – The Beavers lived up to their reputation as one of the best teams in the nation on Friday night.
Ranked No. 2 in the first ACHA Division I men's hockey poll, Minot State wasted no time showing it deserved that honor, scoring 57 seconds into an 11-2 rout of visiting Midland on Friday at the Maysa Arena.
Jay Buchholz's first of two goals in a six-goal first period opened the floodgates for Minot State (5-0-0 overall), who chased one Midland goalie 8:11 into the contest, and never let up.
Joey Moffat and
Sheldin Howard set up the early goal, and both finished with two assists in the win, as the Beavers scored early and often as
Josh Pederson made it 2-0 with 5:34 gone,
Connor Navrot made it 3-0 just 37 seconds later, then
Landyn Cochrane's first of two chased Midland goal Nahuel Veyan with 8:11 gone.
Just 27 seconds later, Buchholz scored his second of the period to make it 5-0, then
Carter Barley scored his first of two for a 6-0 lead with 7:47 left in the first period, virtually icing the win with more than two periods remaining.
Barley finished the night with two goals and two assists for Minot State, while
Jared Hamm had three assists, and
Drew Carter added a goal and two assists for Minot State, which led 10-0 before the Warriors (0-3-0) got on the board late in the second period.
Davis Sheldon added a goal, as did
Christian Kadolph who scored his first collegiate goal with 5:02 gone in the third, making it 11-1.
Eric Krywy,
Reece Henry, Reid, Arnold, and
Troy Hamilton added an assist each in the win, and
Riley Wallace finished with 17 saves making his first start of the season in goal for the Beavers.
The two teams meet again Saturday night at 7:30 p.m. at the Maysa Arena to wrap-up their weekend series.
