JAMESTOWN, N.D. -
Oscar Nellis and Cannon Potts led the way for the Beavers on Saturday, each claiming tournament titles at the Jamestown Invitational as the Minot State men's wrestling team got their season underway.
Nellis won three straight matches in the 125-pound weight class to claim his first championship of the new season, while Potts picked up four wins at 174 pounds, including a victory by pin in the title match for Minot State.
After a first-round bye, Nellis scored a tech fall victory over Elijah Barajas of Jamestown, 18-2, then defeated Jack Schoenhard of Northern State, 5-0. Nellis then claimed the title with a 17-9 major decision win over Clayson Mele of Minnesota State Moorhead.
Meanwhile at 174 pounds, Potts won a 15-0 tech fall over Cody Dravis of Minnesota State Moorhead, then scored an 8-0 major decision win over Carston Toedter of Jamestown. In the semifinals, Potts won 7-2 over Anthony Castro of Minnesota State Moorhead, then pinned James Burks in 2 minutes, 15 seconds for the title.
Minot State's
Austin Frantzich nearly claimed another title at 165 pounds as he won 5-2 over Jonas Anez of Minnesota State Moorhead, then picked up a 13-2 major decision win over Mark Haba to earn a shot at the title. In the final, he lost a close 4-2 decision to Jacob Reinardy of Minnesota State Moorhead.
The Beavers also saw three wrestlers finish third, Ethan Wonser at 141 pounds, Ryan Hrcka at 157 pounds, and Joseph Lopez at 197 pounds.
Minot State is back in action next weekend wrestling at the Bison Open hosted by North Dakota State.
