BEMIDJI, Minn. -- The Minot State women's basketball team went into the half beating Bemidji State 36-33, but could not hang on in the second half and fell 89-61 to Bemidji State on the road Friday in the Battle of the Beavers.
Minot State (8-13 overall, 6-8 NSIC) had two players score in double figures, led by Amber Stevahn who had 20 points, six rebounds and three steals. Kate Head tacked on 14 points, four assists and three steals, and Calli Delsman added nine points.
Minot State forced 15 Bemidji State turnovers. The Beavers turned those takeaways into 16 points on the other end of the floor. Stevahn's three steals led the way for Minot State.
How It Happened
After falling behind 7-4, Minot State went on a 6-0 run with 5:45 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Janie Wunderlich to take a 10-7 lead. The Beavers then maintained that lead and entered the quarter break with a 19-16 advantage. Minot State did most of its first-quarter damage in the paint, scoring 14 of its 19 points close to the basket.
Minot State kept its first quarter lead intact before going on an 8-0 run starting at the 6:17 mark in the second period to increase its lead to 34-23. The host Beavers cut into that lead, but the visitor still enjoyed a 36-33 advantage heading into halftime. Minot State dominated in the paint, scoring 12 of its 17 points close to the basket.
Minot State then lost its advantage in the third quarter and trailed the host Beavers 59-46 entering the fourth.
Minot State could not pull any closer in the fourth, losing by a final of 89-61. Minot State took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring 12 of its 15 points in the paint.
