GUNNISON, Colo. –
Brendan Barnes led the way Friday, picking up a pair of wins on his way to a third-place finish for the Minot State men's wrestling team at the Western Colorado Open.
One of three Beavers to place in the tournament, he was joined by
Logen Fischer and
Brody Mohr who each finished fifth in their respective weight class at the tournament for Minot State, which is back in action Saturday competing in the Tracy Borah Duals hosted by Western Colorado.
Competing at 165 pounds, Barnes opened the day with a loss then battled back strong with a win by pin over New Mexico Highlands' Colin Brown, then a 9-1 major decision win over Air Force Prep's Logan Park in the third-place match.
Fischer's day started better in the 133-pound weight class where he won a 6-5 decision over Western Colorado's Noah Kasprowics and a 15-5 major decision over Andres Jiron of New Mexico Highlands.
After falling into the consolation bracket, Fischer battled back to win the fifth-place match by pin over Jiron.
As for Mohr, who also wrestled at 165 pounds, he responded to an opening setback with a win by pin over teammate
Austin Frantzich, then he won a 9-1 decision over Adam State's Cody Lewis, and in the fifth-place match, he won by pin over Adam State's Wesley Van Matre.
