GUNNISON, Colo. – It was a perfect day for Minot State's
Wayne Joint and
Jake Swirple as each went 4-0 on the mats, leading the way for the Beavers at the Tracy Borah Duals hosted by Western Colorado on Saturday.
While Joint and Swirple went undefeated in the dual tournament, Minot State split the day picking up a 25-22 win over New Mexico Highlands and a 22-18 victory over Colorado State Pueblo but falling 31-14 to Adams State (Colo.) and losing 22-19 to host Western Colorado.
Joint dominated at 133 pounds with a win by pin in 2 minutes, 2 seconds over Aleksander Gunn from CSU-Pueblo, and a 10-0 major decision win over Julius Kohn from New Mexico Highlands. He also picked up a 14-4 major decision win over Dale Van Matre from Adams State and scored an 8-5 decision victory over Patrick Allis of Western Colorado.
As for Swirple, he also was unbeatable in the heavyweight, 285-pound weight class, as he picked up major decision wins over Wil Aucoin of Adams State, 14-4, and over Josiah Aldinger from CSU-Pueblo, 12-2. He also picked up a pair of wins by decision, 5-0 over Jayden Johnson from New Mexico Highlands and 4-0 over Zach Schraeder from Western Colorado.
Adding to the Beavers success was
Brendan Barnes at 165 pounds as he went 3-1 on the day with all three of his wins by pin, in 3:41 over Ivan Smith Jr. from New Mexico Highlands, in 1:11 over Mario Tafoya from CSU-Pueblo, and in 4:14 over Walker Heckendorf of Western Colorado.
Minot State's
Cayden White (184 pounds),
Ethan Wonser (141 pounds), and
Cannon Potts (197 pounds) all picked up a pair of wins on Saturday. White pinned Zackary Small of New Mexico Highlands in 49 seconds and won a 14-12 decision over Donn Greer of CSU-Pueblo. Wonser pinned Joseph Misitano of New Mexico Highlands in 1:09 and won a 4-1 decision over Noah Kasprowicz of Western Colorado. Potts pinned Ben Tonnessen of Adams State in 1:11 and won a 14-0 major decision over Sage Harrison of Western Colorado.
Kelby Armstrong (157 pounds) added the final win of the day for Minot State, a 4-2 decision over Cyruss Meeks of CSU-Pueblo.
Next up, the Beavers return to NSIC action next weekend as they compete at Minnesota State, Mankato on Friday, then at Parkside in Wisconsin on Saturday.
