JAMESTOWN, N.D. – Minot State's
Cannon Potts battled his way to the title match Saturday before taking his first loss of the season, leading the way for the Beavers at the season-opening Jimmie Open hosted by Jamestown.
Potts won a pair of matches by pin and added a technical fall victory at 197 pounds, earning a spot in the championship match before he fell by a 10-4 decision to the University of Mary's Michael Murillo for the title.
Potts' performance led the way for the Beavers who also got great outings from freshman
Gavin Turk at 174 and senior
Brendan Barnes at 165, who both finished third winning their respective consolation bracket final, and junior
Ryan Hrcka who finished fourth at 157 pounds.
Minot State is back in action next weekend at their second tournament of the season, the Dakota Wesleyan Open on Nov. 9.
Potts finished the day with pins in 22 seconds and 1:44, and a 15-0 technical fall win on his march to the title match.
As for Barnes, he picked up three victories by pin, winning his first match in 2:55, scoring a pin in 2:38 in the quarterfinals, then claiming the consolation title with a pin in 3:59 over Northern State's Kaden Broer. His lone setback was a 10-5 decision loss to Mary's Kaden Renner in the semifinals.
Newcomer, Turk, added an impressive collegiate debut with 7-4 and 5-2 decision wins before a 4-2 decision setback to Minnesota State Moorhead's Mason Gode in the semifinals. Bouncing back strong, Turk finished his day with a 13-4 major decision victory over North Dakota State's Alex Kowalchyk to claim third.
And rounding out the placers for the Beavers was Hrcka who won his opener by pin in 3:57, then scored another pin in the quarterfinals with 15 seconds left in the match. His run ended with back-to-back setbacks, a 17-1 technical fall loss in the semifinals, and a 9-0 major decision setback in the third-place match.
