MITCHELL, S.D. – Minot State's
Wayne Joint led the way with a fourth-place finish for the Beavers, while freshman
Gavin Turk turned in his second strong performance as he was sixth at the Dakota Wesleyan Open on Saturday.
Joint battled all the way to the championship semifinals of the 141-pound bracket before suffering his first setback as he picked up a pair of wins by decision and a major decision victory.
Bouncing back strong in the consolation semifinals, Joint won in overtime to earn a spot in the consolation championship before settling for fourth place.
As for Turk, who finished fourth a week earlier in his collegiate debut at the Jimmie Open hosted by Jamestown, he again had a strong tournament as he opened with a major decision win and a victory by decision before a semifinal setback, as well, in the 174-pound bracket. Back-to-back consolation bracket setbacks left Turk sixth at the tournament.
While Joint and Turk led the way, the Beavers also got multiple wins on the day from
Cannon Potts at 197 pounds, though he did not place. Potts won by tech fall to start the day and by pin in his second match before being knocked into the consolation bracket where he added one more win by pin on the day.
Adrian Chavez (133),
Andrew Worthington (141),
Tristan Pekas (157),
Ryan Hrcka (157), and
Dom Howlett (184) each added a victory on the day for the Beavers, who also got collegiate win No. 1 from freshman
John Armstrong at 165 pounds.
