INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Minot State senior heavyweight
Jake Swirple turned in a determined performance over the weekend that earned him fourth-place honors at the Midwest Classic hosted by the University of Indianapolis.
After starting his weekend going 2-1 on Saturday, Swirple found himself one of three Beavers battling for a top finish on Sunday and he made a charge through the consolation bracket at 285 pounds to earn a spot in the third-place match before seeing his run end in fourth place.
That run saw the Beaver senior – who is ranked No. 11 in the nation by the NWCA – pick up an 11-3 win by decision over Tiffin's Jake Powell, a 10-6 win by decision over Kale Schrader from Newberry, and a 4-2 win by decision over Colorado Mesa's Tyler Doyle to put Swirple into the consolation semifinals.
His march to the consolation championship match continued with a 4-2 decision win over Dorian Crosby from Gannon, making Minot State's heavyweight 6-1 heading into the third-place match where his streak of five straight victories came to an end in a 9-4 decision loss to No. 10-ranked Isaiah Vance from Pitt-Johnstown.
Also in action Sunday for the Beavers were
Wayne Joint at 133 pounds and
Cannon Potts at 197, but never advanced as far as their teammate.
The day started with an 8-3 decision loss for Potts to NSIC foe Chase Stegall from Parkside, ending his weekend, while Joint continued a strong run he began Saturday as he scored his fourth straight consolation-bracket win with an 11-3 major decision victory over Evan Binder from Maryville before a loss to Peter Rolle from Central Oklahoma ended his tournament.
The Beavers now head home to open NSIC action by hosting Parkside (Wis.) on Thursday at 7 p.m. at the MSU Dome.
