MINOT, N.D. – Moving on in the countdown, our next moment actually was 5 years in the making with a dramatic, final record-breaking evening.
No. 6 on Buckshot's Best of 2025 sits Jaxon Gunville, who set the career 3-pointers record at Minot State, and added a single-game 3-pointers record, as well, for the Beaver men's basketball team.
The Minot High product got his start on the hardwood for his hometown team during the COVID-shortened 2020-21 season, playing in 16 games and tossing in 15 3-pointers, a humble start to a record-breaking career from beyond the arc.
Over the next 4 seasons, Gunville became Minot State's premier 3-point sniper, leading the Beavers in 3-pointers made each year and racking up 205 total made 3s heading into his senior season.
Needing 57 triples during his final season to break the all-time record, it took 17 contests for Gunville to become the all-time record holder, a mark he surpassed as he hit 4 3-pointers in a 75-72 home win over Minnesota State, Mankato on January 4, surpassing the old career record of 261 made 3s by Thomas Korf.
From there, the Minot native kept adding to his record with every long-range bucket, finishing the season with 111 total 3-pointers in 2024-25. That total ranks No. 2 all-time for a single season behind Jeff Brandt's 112 3-pointers in 2003-04.
In all, Gunville finished his Minot State career with 316 made 3s, which included tying one final record on the final day of the regular season. Fittingly, the Beaver senior put on a shooting display on "Senior Night" as he hit 10 3-pointers in an 84-80 win over Wayne State, tying the single-game record for 3s of 10 set by Aaron Petterson in February of 2009.
