Beavers edge MSU-Northern

Minot State seals win from free throw line late

HAVRE, Mont. – Minot State University outscored Montana State-Northern 32-27 in the second half to rally for a 69-66 win over the Skylights in nonconference NAIA women's basketball here Saturday.
MSU senior Caroline Folven (C, Byron, Ill.) gave the Beavers a 64-63 lead on an offensive rebound putback with 24 seconds to play and Dora Garza (Jr., G, San Antonio, Texas) kept the Skylights at bay hitting 4 of 4 free throws in the final 10 seconds for the win.

"It was a grind it out kind of a win," said MSU head coach Sheila Green Gerding. "A great team effort with a lot of individuals stepping up at different times. We grew up a lot this game."
The Beavers trailed by two points at halftime, but it could have been much more as Northern built a 10-point lead midway through the first half. MSU stormed back with a 15-3 run propelled by a 3-pointer by Garza and a pair of 3s by Kallie Erickson (Sr., G, Fordville, N.D.).
MSU outscored the Skylights 22-16 in the paint, mainly behind a 14-point effort by Folven and a 13-point night from Carly Boag (Fr., F, Tamworth, Australia). Folven also finished with a game-high eight rebounds.
The Lights got 20 points from Samm Schermele in the loss. Northern forced 24 MSU turnovers and scored 20 points off those turnovers, but allowed the Beavers to shoot an impressive 58.5 from the field.
Along with Garza's free throws at the end, the Beavers were generally solid from the line all night, hitting 16 of 20 from the charity stripe. MSU outscored MSU-N 16-9 from the line and held a 32-21 advantage in rebounds.
Sophomore Sacarra Molina (G, Hinsdale, Mont.) turned in a solid effort, scoring 13 points, pulling down five rebounds and adding two assists. Garza and Erickson both scored nine points and Garza added five rebounds and three assists.
