MINOT, N.D. – What started out as a slow start turned into an extremely fast finish.
Minot State University blitzed Brandon (Manitoba) University over the final 30 minutes to run away with a 108-40 nonconference NAIA women's basketball win Sunday at the MSU Dome.
The slow start had some to do with fatigue as the No. 14 ranked Beavers played their third game in four day and some had to do with a little too much unselfish play.
“We looked really tired to start out and tried too hard to get the ball inside,” said MSU head coach
Sheila Green Gerding. “We were trying to force some things that weren't there. We were trying too hard to get everyone involved. We just needed to play our games.”
Once the Beavers (6-2 overall, 1-1 DAC) did that, points came in bunches. MSU had a 44-19 halftime lead and hit for 64 second-half points. Everybody scored for the Beavers, six scored at least eight and four reached double figures.
“We were trying to prepare to go to Canada (vs. the University of Manitoba) and work on some offensive things,” Green Gerding said. “We have struggled with some things offensively and it was good to play a game and get some game situations to run your stuff instead of just practice.”
MSU shot 57 percent for the game and 65.9 in the second half. The Beavers were led by
Carly Boag (Fr., F, Tamworth, Australia) who scored 25 points, while
Katie Hardy (Fr., F, Fairview, Mont.) added 15.
Caroline Folven (Sr., C, Byron, Ill.) capped a great week with 11 points, three steals and two rebounds and
Kallie Erickson (Sr., G, Fordville, N.D.) hit three 3-pointers for 11 points.
“Katie did a great job, she played her game and it was good to see that,” Green Gerding said. “She can do a lot of things.”
Brandon was held to just six first-half field goals and 25 percent shooting overall. MSU also forced 31 Bobcat turnovers in the game, finishing with 25 steals.
The Bobcats (0-11) were led by Kelsey Solarchuk who scored nine points and pulled down six rebounds.
Christina Boag (Fr., F, Tamworth, Australia) finished with a game-high 11 rebounds for the Beavers and scored eight points.
Sacarra Molina (So., G, Hinsdale, Mont.) had six points, six assists and five steals for MSU.
The Beavers finish off a wild weekend with a game at the University of Manitoba Monday, starting at 4 p.m. The game is a make-up game from an earlier postponed game and has a time change from last week as it moved up from a 7 p.m. to 4 p.m. tipoff.
