RAPID CITY, S.D. – Minot State University made a quick run early in the second half to take a 52-49 lead and looked to have rebounded from losing a big first-half lead.
South Dakota Mines, however, responded quickly.
The Hardrockers went on a quick 8-4 run capped by a 3-pointer by Nathan Jacobson and Mines never relinquished the lead to defeat MSU 90-74 in Dakota Athletic Conference men's basketball action Friday at Goodell Gymnasium.
“They made a huge run on us,” said MSU head coach Peter Stewart. “We talk about opportunities for us and we didn't take care of business. We didn't execute our game. We have got to get better.”
The quick 8-4 run was followed by a game-changing 15-4 run that saw the Beavers go without scoring for a two minute stretch. MSU made small runs to get the score under double figures, but never came closer than eight.
Minot State (2-4 DAC, 8-12 overall) sprinted to a big 24-15 lead behind sharp shooting by
Nathaniel Packineau (Sr., G, Parshall, N.D.) and all-around solid play by
Bojan Janjic (Sr., G, Kikinda, Serbia). Packineau hit his first three 3-pointers during the run and Janjic scored 10 points in the run.
“Bojan was outstanding, but he has to sit the last five minutes of the game (after fouling out),” Stewart said. “Nathaniel was as good as there was tonight. He played good defense and got his shots to fall.”
But Mines (3-3 DAC, 11-9) rebounded from the early run to outscore the Beavers 25-10 down the stretch in the first half to take a 42-38 halftime lead.
The Beavers shot the ball well, hitting 47 percent from the floor, but allowed 56 percent shooting by the Hardrockers, including an 8 of 15 mark beyond the arc. Mines took care of the ball all night as they had just three turnovers at halftime before finishing with 12. The Beavers are among the nation's best stealing the ball, but ended with just six steals in the game.
Michael Dietz led all scorers with 27 points and nine rebounds for SDM. Jacobson finished with 18 points and five, hitting 4 of 5 3s, and added five assists in the win.
“You know, Dietz scores 27 and he probably hit the majority of them from 2-feet,” Stewart said. “We didn't get what we needed from out posts.”
Packineau and Janjic combined for 45 points. Janjic finished with 23 points, nine rebounds and an assist. Packineau scored 22 hitting five 3s in the game. But the rest of the Beavers combined for just 29.
MSU will try to get its first DAC road win of the season in one of the toughest places to play as they play at No. 3 ranked and DAC leading Black Hills State Saturday beginning at 6 p.m. (MT).
