MINOT, N.D. – Such is the life of a Dakota Athletic Conference women's basketball team.
One minute you're the upset-ee, the next week, the upset-er.
Minot State University Katie Hardy (Fr., F, Fairview, Mont.) and Sacarra Molina (So., G, Hinsdale, Mont.) combined to score 43 points to help the Beavers upset No. 21 Jamestown College 76-68 in women's college basketball Wednesday at the MSU Dome.
“We just needed to get a win,” said MSU head coach Sheila Green Gerding as the Beavers snapped a three-game losing streak. “This was huge for us. We were a basketball team with our backs against the wall and really are thinking one at a time.
“Now maybe we can advance with a little bit better feeling about ourselves.”
The Beavers were ranked 17th last week before dropping two games on the road last weekend. But back at home – where the Beavers are undefeated (7-0) on the season – MSU kept the game in control.
MSU (13-6 overall, 4-4 DAC) led much of the way, but never more than five points until late. The back-and-forth game saw the Beavers build a small lead and the Jimmies (15-5, 5-3) rally.
Hardy was not only the go-to player on offense, but was one of MSU's top defensive players, making big stops on JC's Bridget Schuneman down the stretch. Hardy finished with four rebounds, three assists and two steals to go along with 22 points.
“Hardy proved she can take over a game,” Green Gerding said. “She is a great shooter and inside and out, she wanted the ball. On defense, she wanted the assignment (guarding Schuneman) and that's the first time this year where she said that. She did a good job on her.”
Molina scored nearly all of her 21 points within two feet of the basket as she finished with six steals, converting four into layups. Molina added six assists, four rebounds and one block to her totals all the while protecting the ball from the points as she had just one turnover.
“Sacarra looked to get to the rim,” said Green Gerding. “Sometimes she has the mindset to get the ball to others; tonight she had the mindset to score.”
The Jimmies shooting and turnovers kept them from making any run at MSU as JC finished with just 32.8 percent from the floor and 25 turnovers. Still, it was a one possession game with less than a minute to play. Shuneman's 17 points were a big reason as well as Amber Ramlo's 22 points, 15 rebounds and 4 of 5 shooting from beyond the arc.
“They made some adjustments against our zone that we knew they would do,” Green Gerding said. “We gave up some open stuff out of the press. They chewed it up at times but at times we were able to force some turnovers.”
Casey Geffre added 10 points and six rebounds and Hannah Steele added seven points, six assists and four rebounds. JC out rebounded the Beavers 44-38, but held a 20-12 edge on the offensive boards
The Beavers got eight points and eight rebounds for freshman Carly Boag (F, Tamworth, Australia) and six points each from Lauren Safranski (Fr., G, Burnsville, Minn.) and Christina Boag (Fr., F, Tamworth, Australia).
The Beavers will have a couple days before getting back into conference play as they play host to Valley City State Sunday (4 p.m.) at the Dome.
